Heavy Penalties for Chinese Law-breakers

Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, April 22. Following a police raid on a barricaded house, Ah Jong was charged in the Police Court with allowing the premises to be used for smoking opium. Gin Ah On was charged with being in possession of prepared opium, while Ah Chong, Wong Chong, Ah Wong and Ah King were charged with being unlawfully on premises. Imposing a sentence of two months’ imprisonment on Ah Jong the magistrate said previous lines had failed as a deterrent. Gin Ah On was fined £3O, Ah King and Wong Cliong £2O each, Ah Chong £l2 10s and Ah Wong was discharged.
