SHANNON Airs. J,. A. Easton presided at the April meeting and extended a welcome to threo visitors, one coming from Wellington, one coming from W hauga'rci and andother from Oaniaru. Airs. A. Richards was elected a new member and tho resignation was received with regret of Airs. Waring Taylor, a foundation member of the institute. The secretary of the Returned Soldiers * Association wrote conveying to the ladies of the institute the committee’s deep appreciation for their valuable assistance on the night of the last social given to the men going overseas. Half of the net proceeds (£2 2s lid) w*as enclosed—this is expended by the institute in buying gifts for men proceeding overseas. It is hoped to arrange a talk by Aliss Grant for next meeting. Present at afternoon tea which was served by the hostesses, ALcsdames J. Caldwell, R. Andrew, J. Bovis and A. Burling, were Air. Bovis (Town Clerk) and Councillor Clayton. The object of their presence was to solicit the help of the YV.I. in giving an evening in the Parish Hall on Waturuay, April 19, for the Alayor and Mayoress (Air. and Mrs. E. Butt) who on (Sunday celebrated their diamond wedding. This was a particularly fitting request for Airs. Butt was the first president of the (Shannon W.I. Tho members enthusiasitically entered into making arrangements for the function. Mrs. Easton thanked all those who had helped with the institute birthday party, especially mentioning Mrs. Edmonds who had played the dance music ■and as a token of appreciation she was j presented with a crystal vase. Airs. Easton asked that their appreciation be conveyed to Aiessrs. J. Sinclair and Edmonds for the assistance they gave in making the party a success. It was decided that the Anzac dinner for returned soldiers on April 25 (which was not given last year on account of many of them attending the dawn parade at .Wellington) would this year take place 'as usual and it is hoped that all those institute members not present at the meeting will come forward and help as in tne past. A suggestion was made that instead of giving a small prize each month for the monthly competition (apart from the best bloom) a cup or shield be procured, this to be heid jby the person securing the most points over 12 competitions for one year. On : account of the small attendance it was ’decided to hold this matter over until next meeting day. It was decided that commencing at the Alay meeting there would be a gold.eu thread talk each month, Mrs. j. A. Easton to give the 'first which will be “Lord Nuffield.” There will be a four line limerick com’petition on Hitler. Other competitions (Will be (1) best bloom and (2) best jar ’of preserved fruit in syrup. Airs. R. j Lind is to be asked to give the programme. April competition winners • were:—Best bloom, Mrs. J. W. Alurruy ;1, Airs. J. P. Allerby 2, Airs. R. Roberts ,3; prettiest doily, Airs. J. W. A'lurray I, Airs. Lang 2. FOXTON At the April meeting Airs. J. F. Riches (vice-president) capably presided in the absence on holiday of the president, j Mrs. L. J. Chittenden. Prior to the commencement of business members stood in silence as a mark of respect to the memory of the late Airs. L. Sutherland. A welcome was extended to tho visitors. The resignation of Mrs. J. R. Middleton, who has left the district, was rcccied with regreL Owing to the inability of the secretary (Airs. W. R. Byne) to attend, Airs. A. Chappell was elected delegate to attend the council meeting to be held at Tiakitaliuna on April 23. Airs. B. Dudson kindly offered to mske the Anzac wreath on behalf of tho institute, the offer being accepted with thanks. Airs. Dudson will also make the necessary arrangements for institute members to attend at the Y.M.C.A. canteen at the camp on Sunday evenings. Airs. F. H. Alurray and Miss W. Murray were elected A roll-call on household hints proved 4 most amusing and profitable. ‘ After afternoon tea, Mrs. Oliver, of Oroua Downs, gave a very interesting demonstration on wool quilting and faggotting. Alembers’ attention was field throughout and a h'jarty vote of thanks was accorded tho demonstrator. Competitions resulted: Jar of apple jelly, Mrs. AL Petersen 1, Miss Thomas 2, Mr#. C. Ale Ewan 3; best vegetable, Mrs. 11. Hussey 1, Miss Thomas 2, Airs. AL Petersen 3.
