A WONDER HORSE Tho brilliant Victorian sprinter El Golea, who was severely wounded when ( ho was the victim of an attack intended for Beau Vito just before the Melbourne Cup last year, staged a return to the winning list at Felmington last Saturday week. Commenting on the victory,' the Sydney Sunday Sun says: i ‘Making one of tho most remarkable comebacks in Australian racing history, El Golea dashed from tho tail of the field to victory in the Seaside Handicap at Flemington. El Golea received a champion’s ovation, tho cheers commencing a hundred yards from the post, | when he had the race won. In the horse’s hind legs are two bullets, mj tended for the Melbourne Cup favour- , ito, Beau Vite, last spring. El Colea’s return to form is one of the wonder stories of the turf. There seemed little chance that ho would live, let alone race again, after the gangsters had dealt with him in his stall at J. Fryer’s stable. Even though he recovered, the fact that two bullets could not be extracted would have meant retirement for any but an outstanding horse. When sent to the paddocks for a spell, however, El Golea so improved that it was thought worth while giving him another trial.”
