Women’s Institutes

HALCOMBE There was a largo gathering on Friday evening for the tenth birthday. Dancing occupied the major portion of the programme with a euchre tournament for non-dancers. Mrs. R. Williams* (president) after lighting the candles made by Mrs. A. McNae and iced by Mrs. A. Bowater, called on Mrs. Simpson to extinguish the candles. Mrs. Simpson, a member of the Oroua Federation, cut the first piece of cake and extended greetings on behalf of the Federation, Miss J. Rosser speaking for Stan way and Mrs. A. McNae for the W.D.F.IJ. The cake was afterwards cut and handed round and many appreciative remarks were made about it. The euchre prizes were won by Mesdames E. Rosser and A. McNae and Messrs. C. Craine, blue taffeta; D. Managh, white net; P. O’Sullivan, green floral, L. McKinnon, blue taffeta; B. Betteridge, mauve, taffeta; M. O’Sullivan, blue sheer; ,T. Rosser, pink taffeta; J. Fergussou, honey coloured sheer; Q. Hughes, blue taffeta; M. Mason, red taffeta; N. Jefferies, pink lace. The Lucky Gay Gordons’ dance was won by Miss Woodford and Mr. R. Anderson and the Monte Carlo by Mrs. L. Thompson and partner. TOKOMAETJ Mrs. C. Osman presided at the monthly meeting of the Women's Institute. A demonstration on making wool mops by Mesdames R. Gulliland and T. Lynch was much appreciated. KIMBOLTON Mrs. Gerke presided over the tenth annual meeting. Mrs. Stunnel was enrolled as a new member. The annual report was read by the secretary. The president gave her address and thanked all those who had helped during the year. Mrs. Ritchie read the financial statement and moved its adoption which was seconded by Miss Waugh. Mr. Calder was appointed auditor for the coming year. Mrs. Gerke presented Miss Waugh with' an institute cooking book on the occasion of her approaching marriage. Mrs. Harris spoke in appreciation of Mrs. Gerke's work during her first year as president. Mrs. Gerke then asked Mrs. W. G. Short (who had been appointed teller) to tako the chair. Mrs. Short pointed out the advantages of nominating a member for the Federation executive committee and Mrs. Ritchie proposed Mrs. Gerke for the Oroua Federation executive committee, seconded by Mrs. Harris. Mrs. Gerke was then re-elected president and welcomed back to the chair. Fourteen members were nominated for the committee and Mrs. Gerke proposed, seconded by Mrs. Banks, that all be on the committee. Mrs. Short then duly elected the committee w’hich is as follows:—Mesdames Banks, Craighead, Harris, Jones, Jensen, Knox, Marshall, Myers, Osborne, Ritchie, Scott, Youle and Miss Ritchie. Mesdames Harris Youle and Osborne were elected vicepresidents. Mrs. Short spoke on institute matters, also the patriotic work •which is being done by the institutes and gave helpful about the packing of soldiers' parcels. Competition winners were:—Collection decorative dahlias, Mrs. Jones 1, Mrs. Youle 2; collection poms, Mrs. Jones 1, Mrs. Ritchie 2; collection charms, Mrs. Jones 1, Mrs. Gerke 2; collection cactus, Mrs. Youle 1, Mrs. Scott 2. Competition for April will be collection of autumn flowers (not more than 12), and basket of autumn berries and foliage. AOKAUTERE The newly elected president (Mrs. ’E. Brungar) was in the chair at the April meeting on Tuesday and welcomed the large company in attendance. Mrs. Brungar thanked the members for electing her, and said she would do her utmost to promote the interest of the institute. A prayer for peace was read by the president. Mrs. L. Hastings was welcomed and enrolled as a new member. The retiring president, Mrs. D. Scott, was asked to accept a gift from the institute in appreciation of her services during the two years she was president. Mesdames Brungar and Tate were appointed delegates to attend the council meeting at Tiakitahuna on April 23. A successful bring and buy stall was conducted, Mrs. P. Field and Miss D. McKinley were elected stewards. A public meeting is to be called in the hall to form a Red Cross circle. Mrs. McKinley kindly offered to pack the soldiers' parcels for overseas. April’s competitions resulted: Three kinds of vegetables, seniors, Mrs. McKinley 1, Mrs. Tate 2, Mrs. Lankshear 3; juniors, buttonhole, Miss D. McKinley 1, Miss H. Lankshear 2, Miss E. Blenkion 3; best bloom, Miss 1. Anderson 1, Mrs. R. Scott 2, Mr 3. Lankshear and Mrs. Tate equal 3. Next,, month’s competition will be for a pair of boys’ pants, a baking powder tin of gingernuts. Hostesses for May are Mrs. P. Field, Miss C. Field and Miss E. Blenkion.
