Nireaha

(From Our Own Correspondent.) Troopers R. F. Thomasen and C. D. Goss of this district have entered the I’oxtou military camp to undergo three months’ intensive training with the Wellington East Coast Mounted Rifles. Miss Hazel Davis is holidaying with Mr. and Mrs. li. Websfer of Carterton. Mr. and Mrs. P. Berry were recent Visitors to Hastings. Mr. Brian Spring has left for Levin Where he will undergo training for the Air Force. The first parade of the local Home Guard was well attended and further enrolments brought its strength up to 78 members. Three platoons were formed and Mr. A. G. Colder gave them an idea of the elementary training they Would be called upon to undergo, lie also outlined the services that the Home Guard would render and asked oil members to give of their best and make every endeavour to become a well disciplined company. A later meeting was held during the week when all commanding officers were called together to receive orders that had been received from headquarters. A routine drill was arranged and all officers made conversant with the movements, so that when the full Guard gathered on its next parade night a prompt Start could be made. Tennis During the week-end, a team representing the Nireaha Club journeyed to Hastwells to play a Grcathead Cup Competition game with that club. Despite their total lack of practice Nireaha players put up a good showing against a much stronger club. The result of the match was a win for Hastwells by 39 sets and 117 games to five sets and 69 games. Following are the scores, Hastwells players being first mentioned:— Ladies’ Singles.—Miss H. Although responsible for holding milk production to a good level, a return to fine sunny weather would be Avclcomed by sheep farmers, as continued Avet weather Avill retard lamb fattening. The recent harvesting season has been a satisfactory one, record numbers of bales and stacks being obtained by most farmers. The river at the Stirling Bridge is causing the County Engineer a lot of worry considerable erosion taking place with each flood. Several stop banks have been AA-ashcd awny and unless some permanent protection is erected immediately there is every indication I that the next flood Avill take aAvay the eastern aproach to the bridge. Concern is evident among farmers at the increase of rabbits and Should a fa\'ourable autumn breeding take place this menace will be a serious problem. It is hoped thjht rifle ammunition will become available and local sportsmen will then be able to continue with the destruction of the animals. At a recent meeting of the ladies’ sub-committeo of the Nireaha Patriotic Committee, arrangements Avero made regarding the packing and sending of parcels for soldiers serving overseas. Further letters of appreciation have been received from soldiers serving in Egypt, and Fiji for parcels sent privately and by Patriotic organisations. Mrs. P. Wilkin’s resignation from the office as secretary AA-as received. Mrs. C. H. Hercock was elected to fill the vacancy. At a recent school committee meeting it was decided to have a picnic, which Avill take place on Friday (21) and will be followed by a dance in the evening.
