HIGH SCHOOLS’ BOARD OF GOVERNORS To a meeting of the Palmerston North High School Board of Governors last night, Mr. H. M. Scott, principal of the Technical High School, reported another fall in the roll due to smaller numbers in the second year and senior classes. The first year enrolment was very satisfactory. Compared vvith an abnormally small enrolment of 73 firstyear girls in 1940 there were 107 this year. The school was feeling the effects of the call to employment in these abnormal times, both to city pupils tor trade and industry and to the country pupils for farms. There was also the effect of the opening of Horowhenua College. The following results were gained by students in the examinations held at the end of tho year:—University entrance, 4 day, 5 evening; school certificate, 3 day, 5 evening; partial pans, 3 day, 1 evening; accountants’ professional, 10 sectional passes; certificateajjf Service entrance, 4. day, 1 evening; Chamber of Commerce,.English. ] evening; bookkeeping, 3 evening; Pitman’s speed shorthand, 16U words per minute 1,'120 w.p.m. 1, 110 w.p.m. 1, 100 w.p.m. 7, 90 w.p.m. 3, 80 w.p.m. 0, 70 w.p.m. 4, 60 w.p.m. 6, 50 w.p.m. 7. Miss Watson was unable to resume until February 7 owing to illness. Mr. E. Watts, 8.A., has taken over the relieving position in which Mr. H. Hudson was unable to continue; this is the vacancy caused through Lieut, Slatak&oa being in Waiourn camp. Mr. JO. Slocombe has taken up his duties. Mr. Slocombe completed the accountancy professional examination in the November examination. Mr. Gabbio and Miss Thomson also have taken up their duties. The Tector of the Boys’ High School (Mr. Ji Murray) reported a roll of 331 (101 new pupil*) and there were 47 boarders at College House. The results for 1940 nominations were as follows: Junior University scholarship, B. Miller (credit pass;; qualified for university bursaries, B. Miller, J. Colqulioun, N. Pegden, F. Northev, J. Murray; accountancy professional (section), D. Clark, A. Carrington, R. Eaton; DynesFulton Mcmorjal>Bcholarship, K. {Smith; university entrance, etc., 31; school certificate. S 3; partial school certificate, 15; Public Service entrance, 27; higher leaving certificate, 24; entered training college, 7. The principal of the Girls’ High School (Miss E, E. Stephens) reported a roll of 255 (55 nawpupils). The shortage in numbers was in the senior commercial class so keen was the demand for office girls. The examination results were very satisfactory. Sixteen girls passed both school certificate and university entrance, seven others school certificate only, and two more a partial pass in school certificate.
