Obituary

MR. J. R. JACK The death occurred recently of Mr. John Robertson Jack, of Ferguson Street, in his eighty-sixth year. Mr. Jack was born in Scotland, and spent his early life in the South Island, coming from Oamaru to Palmertson North when 16 years old. Mr. Jack entered the Railways Department, in which he had a particularly fine record of service. Taking up this work as a young man, he held positions of many kinds, and eventually, after a long period of service in Palmerston North, he was appointed to the head position in tho goods shed here, and eventually retired from this post, in token of his popularity in the service he was honoured at a big farewell function at which Sir Joseph Ward was one of the principal speakers. However, when a shortage of men occurred on the outbreak of the Great War, Ml Jack returned to the Railway Department and gave much valuable service through the war years. Mr. Jack was a keen dog fancier, and at shows in Palmerston North and the district exhibited some fine animals which wou numerous prizes. He also gained many awards with canaries. He was a most enthusiastic gardener, and on one occasion wou second prize in a competition for tho best garden in Palmerston North. Mrs. Jack died three years ago and Mr. Jack leaves four daughters—Mesdames A. E. Munson (Palmerston North), F. Downey (Palmerston North), W. Russell (Marton) and E. Fiddler (Feilding)—and two sons— Messrs. A. Jack (Napier) and D. Jack (Palmerston North). Another son, Mr. G. Jack, predeceased his father.
