Six Vacant Seats in Commons
MEMBERS WHO MADE SUPREME SACRIFICE (British Official Wireless.) Received Sunday, 9.20 p.m. RUGBY, Jan. 4. Six seals have become vacant in the Commons and it is feared two other constituencies have lost their member* through war hazards. Of the six j constituencies without members two lost their representatives through services in the R.A.F. These were Hitchen for which Pilot Sir Arnold Wilson sat, and Bodmin whose member was Flying. Officer Kathboue. Another vacancy occurred on account of tho elevation of Viscount Cranborne to the peerage, while the appointment of Sir Reginald Dorman-Smith as Governor of Burma caused a by-election in the Peterstield division. The remaining two vacancies were caused by the death of two members. In addition it is feared that Colonel Baldwin Webbe lost his life when the City of Benares was sunk in September and Major Ronald Cartland, one of the Birmingham members, has been missing since the B.E.F. left Belgium.
