Foxton Beach

(From Our Own Correspondent.) New Year’s Day Sports The Beach Improvement Society’s sports were the centre of attraction on New Year’s Day and a larger crowd than ever congregated on the sportsground to watch the running of the races and novelty events which kept the energetic committee busy until late in the afternoon. Toys were not so plentiful this year, and when the ones in hand had been distributed, the children were given vouchers so that the trade in ice-creams, etc., was a brisk one. Forty-three babies under the age of 12 months were lined up for inspection in the annual baby show and the judges, Nurses Sliortt and Dix, were confronted with a difficult task in singling out the best boy’ and girl. (Special prizes were awarded to Baby Scarf e (girl) and Baby Devonshire (boy), and every entrant was presented with a gift. As has been the custom for some years, the society' wouud up the New Year’s Day activities with a j dance at night, when the floor was almost too crowded for comfort. A general air of lightheartedness prevailed, the dancers joining in the latest song hits and sitters-out were conspicuous by their absence. Winners of the novelty dances were: Lucky Gay Gordons, Aliss Devonshire and Air. C. Weaver; Monte Carlo, Miss Norma Reid and Air. Tom Newton. A competition for a lamb donated by Air.
