Maskery led Cosford up to the stli head but then the Pahiatua pair went ahead gradually and increased their margin. Johnson ran away from Young, leading 12—2 at the Bth, 22—4 at the 13th and 26—5 at the 16th but the 18th Young took with a 4 and the last three heads for a total of six. His recovery was far too late. Second Round. In the second Round Gordon was down 10—-5 to Nicholson at the Bth but a 4 on the 9th renewed his hopes. The next two heads went to the Dannevirke pair but Gordon captured the I2th with a 5 to take the lead, which he held to the end.

Sparrow looked like getting beaten by Taylor who led 12 —7 at the 14th, but he took the 15th with a 3 only to have Taylor come to light on the 16th with a 5. Sparrow, however, recovered with another 3 on the 17th and a 4 on the 19th which brought the pairs level. The 20tk went to Taylor for a single but Sparrow landed 2 on the final head to win.

Ones and twos filled the card of Childs and Bailey, the latter holding the lead right through. Anderson took an early lead over Davidson but the scoring was low throughout the game. Tantrum started off well against Kershaw but a 5 on the 7th gave the Northern pair the lead which they maintained, at the same time widening the margin with heads of 4 up, 3 up and 2 up.

Wenham ran away early from Mattar who scored on five heads only though his total of 16 Comprised a 5, three 3’s and a 2.

Mills looked like beating Nesbit, leading 7—o at the sth head and he maintained the lead though the gap between the pairs lessened, till the 13th. Then Nesbit took charge. Cosford led Smith all the way in the second round, except for the first five heads.

Arnott had a hard struggle against Moore. The score stood 4—3 at the sth and then Moore was in the ascendency though Arnott was never far behind. They were even on the 19th but the last two heads went to the Palmerston North pair. Skoglund had difficulty in shaking off Fitzgibbon who momentarily took the lead when he landed a 5 on the 15th head. They were level on the JBth and

then the Northern pair won the next 3 up. The final two went to Fitzgibbon but only for singles. Greenwood pulled well ahead of Wainwright in the early heads and managed to keep a respectable advantage right through. Cooksley led Mowlem right through their game in the second round. Barton only managed to score on six heads in his ga.me with Hancock, who took the 10th head with a 5. Third Round. Arnott scored on five heads only in his game with Skoglund. but he managed to take the 10th head with a six which is the maximum seoro possible playing three bowls. He stood, s—lo5 —10 at the 9th and this fine effort placed him one ahead of the Northern pair. Skoglund evened with a single on the 11th and then rolled down a succession of wins, giving Arnott the 15th only for a single. The game ended on the 20th head 24r— 12. Greenwood went ahead of Hancock when he took the 7th head with a 4 and he widened the margin on the 12th with another 4. Cooksley gave Christensen little chance, the cards reading 14—3 at the 10th. They finished 27—16 on the 20th. Bailey scored on six heads onh against Kershaw whose card showed a 5, a 4, a 3 and three 2’s as well as eight singles. Wenham went down to Wort after leading right up to the 19tli head. The 20th saw them 15 all, Wort taking the last head with a 3. Nesbit and Cosford went neck and neck to the 18th, first one being in the lead and then the other. The game was decided by Cosford taking the 19th and 20th for a 2 and 4. The 21st was not played. Fleming lost his game with Anderson on the last two heads. On the Bth he led 12—4 but a 4 to Anderson on the 9th reduced the gap though it was not entirely closed until the 14th which Anderson took with a 5 to lead 16 —15. Then Fleming forged ahead but the game was square on the 18th. Fleming took the 19th with a single but Anderson captured the 20th with a 2 and the last head with a single. Sparrow and • Gordon were another lot to run a close race. Gordon held the lead to the 11th. On the 12th the pairs were level and then Sparrow shot ahead. However, Gordon pulled up level again on the 15th and took the lead to the 20th when the cards read 19 —18. Sparrow won the last head with a 2 and also the game. Fourth ly-und.

Kershaw had to fight hard to defeat Cosford who led 9 —5 at the 9th. head but getting the next four heads for three singles and a 2, Kershaw found himself in the lead. On the 14th, however, Cosford secured a 2 and Kershaw replied with a single on the 15th to be level. Winning the 16th 4 up Kershaw secured a better position but he failed on the 17th and 18th thus bringing Cosford close up behind him again. The next two her:ds went to the Northern pair but while they had a lead now of three, the lie in the final was such that a little bit of luck on the Pahiatua side would have closed the gap necessitating an extra head to decide the game. The final score was 17—15.

Anderson never gave .Sparrow a chance and the Palmerston North pair gave up the struggle at the 18th head when the cards read 19—7. Sparrow had scored on five heads only. Skoglund outranked Wort, allowing him to score on six heads of the 21, the final being 24—13. Wort nevertheless won his heads with three 3’s, a 2 and a couple of singles. Skoglund led all the way.

Greenwood kept comfortably ahead of Cooksley to the 12th head and then had to submit to his opponent chalking up a 4 on the 13th and a single on the 14th. The card then read 13—12 in Greenwood’s favour. Next he raised a single but fell to the rear when Cooks ley took the 16th head with a 4, However, Greenwood came to light with a 3 on the 17th and led by one point, namely, 17 —16. Then he won the 18th 2 up and Cooksley followed by winning the 19th and 20th each 2 up. Cooksley now led 20—19.
