Wellington Man Killed

ACTED AS CHILDREN’S ESCORT Psr Press Association. WELLINGTON, Jan. 2. Mr James Yeomans Dixon, who his life in the Rangitane, was wellknown in sports circles in Wellington. Aged 2 n, he was the eldest son of Mr and Mrs G. F. Dixon, Kelburn, Wellington. His father is a veteran member of the Ministerial Secretarial corps at Parliament House. Mr Dixon was educated at Kelburn T" hool, Wellington, and at Wellington College and afterwards studied at Victoria College. He was one of the founders of the Victoria University College Harrier Club and took a keen and active interest in sports. He was a member of the staff of the National Mutual Life Association, Wellington, for seven years and after a period at Dunedin as a radio announcer, he left New Zealand in March, 1939, to work his passage Home in a freighter. After arrival in England, Mr Dixon worked with the Ministry of Labour Juvenile Transference Scheme for building new careers for children from the distressed areas. When war broke out the scheme was curtailed and Mr Dixon was engaged in looking after parties of children at health camps. He was subsequently offered a trip to Australia helping with a party of 500 little Britons. From Sydney he came to New Zealand to see his people. At the time of his death he was on his way back to England, together with other escorts who came out with the children, to undertake whatever war work might await him.
