Jap-Soviet Fishing Agreement
Received Wednesday, 7.30 p.m. MOSCOW', Dec. 31,
Diplomatic sources state that the Soviet has agreed to prolong the Russian-Japanese fishing agreement. The Moscow correspondent of the German station DNB states that diplomats believe an extension of the Russian-Japanese agreement will be signed shortly in view' of several recent conversations between Mr. Tatekawa and M. Molotov.
“Thank you, Mr. Roosevelt,” says: “As free men we cannot withhold out admiration for the statesmanship with which you have roused the people in the new world to the Nazi danger and for the far-sighted generosity with which you have given vital help to democracy and promised more. It steels yet harder our will to keep up the struggle.”
The Manchester Guardian says: “The address was a warning and a pledge. It was a warning to Germany and Japan that the United states endorsed our cause as her own and stands beside us in our effort to prevent Nazi domination of the world. Her part is limited by tlie condition that she will not send an expeditionary force to Europe and will not declare war unless the interests of Americans are attacked. According to an Istanbul message, Cumhuriyet, the leading Turkish newspaper, declared that President Roosevelt’s speech is the “turning point of the war. It is easy to read between the lines that the United States is willing to follow up armaments aid with actual intervention if it thinks necessary. ’ ’
