CO-OPERATION OF STAFFS In response to au invitation from the Citizens’ Committee for one representative from each section of trade and industry to meet, a very large and representative number gathered in the Chamber of Commerce rooms ton Tnursday night. Those present were: Messrs. W. S. Thompson (railways.), C. L. Mayo (P. and T. Department), 11. Faulkner, D. Morton, E. Bary, C. Teppett, B. Pratt, J. L. Chapman, R. H. tepencer, C. R. Luke, S. Bayliss, R. Stubbs, L. West, R. T. Jaggard, YV. Garden, J. W. Jamieson, H. lj. Cunnmgname, and J. C. ■Young; and apologies for absence were received from Messrs. E. V. Spear, H. M. Scott, J. R. iiardie, C. Freyoerg, J. A. Grant, Alex. Clark, Joiin Murray, K. Henderson, J. Faton and H. F. Wilson. Mr. Young was iu the chair and explained that the purpose of the meeting was ro secure their active and sympathetic co-operation in supervising the distribution of staff donation lists in their particular business section. The Patriotic Board’s quota for the Zone D area was £18,500 and provided every section of tho community was given au appropriate orderly method of contributing, he was definitely optimistic the sum would be raised. One* main source of income the committee was depending upon was from individual employees of businesses being given the opportunity of making a small weekly contribution for six months, tho firm itself acting as the collecting medium. Mr. Mayo (Chief Postmaster) stated that the system of a small fortnightly payjnent had boen successfully operating throughout tne post offices for some time, whilst Mr. Thompson explained that in the railway service a very substantial sum was collected fortnightly by the same method. Mr. Young stated a number of private firms in the city also had the scheme operating, and whilst it was entirely vo ntary, tne general experience was that tne majority of staff members throughout welcomed this orderly method of assisting the various patriotic war efforts. Those present readily agreed to supervise their particular sections of tho business community and to deliver the cards to the individual firms to enable the scheme to start operating next week. Mr. H. Cuuuinghame, who had been appointed controller of the staff scheme by the committee, will receive the collections from the individual firms each month and the scheme will terminate on April 30, 1941.
