HOLLYWOOD Beauty SECRETS

FAMOUS MAKE-UP ADVISOR TO THE SCREEN STARS

GLAMOUR-GIRL FORMULA What makes “glamour girls" glamorous? Some of my readers will almost surely reply that it is a matter of wealth—that anyone with an adequate supply of money can immediately command glamour by simply spending plenty of money to acquire it. But this isn’t true. Look about you, and you may observe many shop girls, working for the most minute wages, who are truly glamorous personages. Or, scan your magazines and newspapers. By no means all of the famous and wealthy women which you must encounter in their pages are tho possessors of “glamour." Others of my readers may maintain that being glamorous is purely a problem of personality. “Charm Schools" Those of this opinion are largely correct. Personality is an aid to glamour. And, contrary to a widespread belief, personality can be cultivated and acquired. Schools and colleges of to-day eveu have “charm" classes which very successfully further this quality in their feminine students. In this article, however, we shall principally consider glamour as it is affected by the personal appearance. You can be glamorous to some degree without perfection in personal appearance if you do have a superbly intriguing personality. But, rather obviously, if your personality allows you to be glamorous WITHOUT superbly flawless grooming, you can be even more glamorous WITH such appearance care. Youth It must be remembered that the presence or absence of extreme youth are not factors which must be considered when it comes to the matter of glamour. Such women as Irene Dunne, Claudette Colbert, and Constance Bennett are not in their ’teens, but they are nevertheless completely glamorous women—and they will continue to be so for the rest of their lives. Down through the years 1 have noted that one of the most important &x*d outstanding appearance characteristics of the “glamour girl"—-no matter what

her age—is that sho is a careful and anaylitical appreciator of the fact that one of these proverbial ounces of prevention is superior in pounds of cures when it comes to flaws in the appearance. Brenda Frazier Glamour-girls such as cafe-society’s Brenda Fraziers, or filmdom’s Nan Greys, Rita Hayworths, Dorothy Lamours, aud Vivien Leighs, for instance, are quite aware that au erect carriage of the body is of tho utmost importance to a glamorous appearance. Therefore, these glamorous women of the films and society never give way to the urge to slouch as they walk or sit. They walk with a comfortably erect carriage, and the shoulder and upper torso movements are always co-ordin-ated with their stride. They sit properly and erectly, without ungracefully leaning to one 6ide or the other. And all of these practises naturally aid in keeing the figure trim, attractive—and glamorous. Never hav-

ing succumbed to the slouching urge, they Me not faced with, the difficult problem of correcting it. The problem of proper sitting should be of particular importance to office girls who are constantly seated before a typewriter. These women perpetually claim that their work results in their acquiring unattractively broad “office hips." It won’t if they will sit with their feet squarely on the floor, and with their body held easily and naturally erect from the hips up. The “office hip" bulge usually is the result of a sagging slump in the seated working posture. Colour Harmony The true glamour girl is not constant* ly changing the colour of her hair. She know's that too great a frequency rate in this activity does the quality of her hair more harm than good. And when and if she does change her hair colour, sho also alters her make-up tints to coincide with this new factor in her personal colour harmony scheme. Successfully glamorous girls are the arch enemies of incompleted grooming practises, and ones which lack in decisiveness. Their hair ends are never carelessly left sticking out. Their lipstick or rouge is never daubed on in a hurried or haphazard manner. The glamorous girl knows that the artistie completion of all such details is essen* tial to her appearance charm. Nor do these girls ever merely guess that their cheek rouge or lipstick patterns are the correct ones which will most completely complement their own personal beauty type. They know. They have either carefully analyzed their own features, and then created artistically correct make-up patterns for themselves, or they have trusted this matter to a skilled make-up advisor. You If you haven’t already, try these principles of appearance technique as practiced by the famous glamour girls of Hollywood films and society. Carefully analyze and seek decisive perfection, not in just a few, but in EVERY detail of costume, coiffure, carriage, and make-up. The results may agree* , ably surprise you.
