Germany Trying To Spread War

LONDON, Sept. 25. The recent Axis conference in Rome revealed the increasing strength of Britain and also indicated the spreading of the European war, according to the influential Chinese daily Takung Pao, says a message from Chungking. "Germany,” it says, “is suffering a setback in the War of Britain and is therefore anxious to extend the area of the war and also to strengthen the Axis. On the other hand, as a result of the closer Anglo-American co-opera-tion, the strength of Britain is daily increasing.” At Singapore, the Government to-day issued plans for the formation of a local defence corps on a voluntary basis. British subjects and Britishorotected persons are eligible.
