Bowling in the Manawatu

ANNUAL MEETING OF CENTRE There was an attendance of 30 delegates at the annual meeting yosterday of the Manawatu Howling Centre, all clubs affiliated to the centre except three being represented. Mr. J. A. Nash, the president, was in the chair. A letter from the Taranaki Centre expressed appreciation of the hospitality extended to Taranaki bowlers at the Manawatu Easter tournament. Similar sentiments were expressed in a letter from the Kia Toa Club (Hastings). Permission was given the centre’s bowls tester, Mr. A. Andrews, to transfer his gear from the Terrace End Club to Northern. Mr. Andrews pointed out that the Northern green was more suitable for the work than Terrace End.

In speaking to the annual report, as already published, Mr. Nash said that the Now Year and Easter tournaments had been very successful, both socially and financially. The centre’s finances were in good order, the credit balance being £143, against which there was a small outstanding liability. The pennants competitions had not been a success last season, due mainly to the effect of bad weather, and the centre would have to consider whether they should be continued this year. The chairman drew attention to a mistake in the annual report, pointing out that the winners of the champion pairs were Connor and Kershaw (Northern). Officers for the coming year were elected as follow.* Patron, Mr. J. Bartholomew (Feilding) j president, Mr. J. A. Nash; vice-presidents, Messrs. H. E. Wenham (Levin), C. Hausmann (Oroua) and E. Bary (Palmerston North); hon. auditor, Mr. K. W. Eglinton; executive, Messrs. T. L. Arnotfc (Palmerston North), E. H. Smith (Takaro), G. W. Corbridge (Manawatu), J. J. O’Shea (Terrace End), E. D. Wycherley (Hokowhitu) and K. McDonald (Northern), with the vice-presidents; secretary, Mr. A. F. Wimsett.

It was decidod that the New Year and Easter tournaments should be pairs and fours respectively, as is customary. The usual conditions wore agreed to. The chairman briefly roported on the endeavours that had been made during the year to secure more democratic representation on the New Zealand Council and asked whether the meeting desired th© executive still to continue its endeavours to obtain representation for the smaller centres.

Mr. T. L. Arnott pointed out that, of the 22 centres in New Zealand, 12 were not represented on the council, which meant that 5509 players were without a voice.

On the motion of Mr. G. H. Hodd (Pahiatua) the executive was instructed to continue to press for representation for the smaller centres.

Some discussion took place on the desirability of continuing the pennants competitions this season. It was decided to hold the matter over until details are availablo of the working of the Taranaki Centre’s competition, when clubs will be given the opportunity of expressing their opinion.

It was decided that the centre's season should be officially opened at the Terrace End Club on October 5. The Northern Club forwarded the following remit: “That the champion of champions fours competition be comprised of a representative four from each club who shall play according to their club classification; namely, each representative team to have a recognised or classified No. 1,2, 3 and skip.'’ In supporting tho remit, Mr. K. McDonald said the proposal would stop clubs from selecting their best four, irrespective of the positions they customarily played in in club play. The chairman pointed out that the centre’s rules provided that each club’s representatives should be its champion four, as found in competition. Representatives of several of the smaller clubs spoke against the remit, saying that classification of their players -would be impossible. On being pnt to the meeting, the remit was lost by a considerable majority. Tribute was paid by the meeting to tho work done by the past year's officers, particular reference being made to Mr. Nash’s services. TAKARO CLUB The following will represent the Takaro Club at the Feilding Bowling Club’s opening on Saturday: E. Fisher, H. Field, A. Johnson, E. H. Smith (skip).
