Oil docs not lessen the size of rough seas, but does tend to prevent them from combing or breaking. Animal or vegetable oil is used whenever available, although fuel oil will be effective if the water temperature is fairly high. The effect of any oil is less at lower
temperatures of the water, but it will usually be of aid in any sea in which a lifeboat can live.
