PALMERSTON NORTH CLUB Presenting the annual report and balance-sheet for the season ended Aug- I ust 31, 1940, the committee of the Palmerston North Latvn Tennis Club records the following membership: Active, 100 (129); country, 9 (IS); junior, 27 (21); honorary,.49 (69); life, 17. The annual open tournament was held in conjunction with the twelfth annual tournament of the Manawatu , Lawn Tennis Association when the various titles were won as follow: \ Men’s singles, R. Howe; women’s singles, Miss M. Beverley; men’s doubles, D. Livingston and J. Roach; women’s doubles, Misses N. and M. Beverley; mixed doubles, W. Boddy and Miss M. Beverley; boys’ singles, R. Mackenzie; girls’ singles, Miss N. Husc. . From the point of view of weather the j season was the most disappointing the club has had for many years, and due primarily to the succession of wet Saturdays in late January and February the Manawatu Association’s inter-rlub competitions were abandoned. Club championship winners were: Men’s singles, I. C. Sheerin; women's singles, Mrs. V. Hobin; men’s doubles, L. : Chapman, G. F. Glaister; women’si doubles, Mcsdamcs V. Hobin and G. H. New; mixed doubles, Mr. and Mrs. V. I Hobin. The excess of income over expenditure for the year was £l7 17s j 3d, but this amount has been written j off as depreciation against plant and ' equipment. Unfortunately, there was a further falling off in subscriptions, but the financial position has been assisted substantially by profits from the open ( tournament (£54 11s lOd), dances, rent of hall, etc. (£25 8s lid) and a hamper i competition (£22 6s 3d). During the s'ear replacements of plant to the ap- j proximate value of £ls have been made and an electric pick-up purchased at a cost of £l3. AII of these items have been written off in the accounts for the year. As we are obliged to make a reduction of our mortgage of £2O per annum it should be noted that a surplus of this amount at least is required to maintain our present cash position. During the season the courts were once more made available to pupils of the local High Schools at a nominal fee and in this connection the committee has again to thank Mr. J. T. McDonald for the excellent work done by him in coaching the junior girls. After thanking all who gave assistance in the past season the report concludes: We would refer to the loss the club has sustained from the enlistment of members for active service, among them being Mr. W. S. Fox (former secretary), and Messrs. C. K. Reid and H. Latta (mem- . bers of the committee). We are faced ; with the loss of further members for j active service as the war continues and the period ahead must necessarily be a most difficult one for the club. The committee therefore appeals to all members for their continued co-operation and help.
