Hon. R. Semple, Minister of Public Works, will be a visitor to Palmerston North to-morrow, when he will make an inspection of the works of the Palmerston North Kiver Board.

Mr. Hendry Luke has been elected chairman of the Auckland Harbour Board to fill the vacancy caused by the sudden death of Mr. E. T. Reid. Mr. A. S. Sutherland, Ngaruawahia, has been elected deputy-chairman in place of Mr. Luke.

Mr. W. E. Bcndall is enjoying a yachting tour in a search among the historic spots around the Whangarei harbour. He was delighted to meet his boyhood friend, Mr. George Levy, who was on the Palmerston North Postal staff 50 years ago.

The death has occurred of Mr. H. J. Bushnell, a veteran of the printing trade and one of Gisborno’s best-known business men. He had suffered only a short illness and was able to attend at his business premises last Friday. He was in his 89th year.

Hr. J. Frederick Staton, conductor of the Sheffield Choir, England, who was In Wellington last year as examiner for the Royal College of Music, is due to arrive at. Auckland soon. Dr. Staton is to act as one of the adjudicators at the coming Wellington competitions. Mr. W. L. Fitzherbert, of Palmerston North, chairman of the Wellington Harbour Board, has been appointed a member of the board of trustees of the National Art Gallery and Dominion Museum, Wellington. Mr. C. M. Turreli is the other representative of the Harbour Board.

Dr. Raymond Firth, the noted anthropologist, arrived in Auckland from Australia this week on his way back to England after a year’s research in Malaya. He is accompanied by liis wife, who has not been in New Zealand before, and they are staying with Dr. Firth’s parents at Otahuhu.

At the P.D.C. tearooms yesterday morning friends of Lieutenant S. Wilson, of the Third Echelon ,who is on leave, met to express to him their best wishes. Mr. O. H. Doel referred to the interest Lieutonant Wilson took in -everything lie was connected with in civilan life and in his army work. All his friends were pleased at his progress and wished him good health and good luck. Lieutenant Wilson, who was the recipient of a cigarette case, acknowledged the wishes extended to him.

When the Board of Governors of Massey College met yesterday advice was received from the secretary of the New Zealand School of Agriculture, that Professor Sir Thomas Hunter, one of the College representatives on the Council of the School of Agriculture, had resigned owing to pressure of other duties. The board expressed regret at the resignation and decided to record its appreciation of Sir Thomas Hunter’s services while a college representative. Mr. M. H. Oram was apopinted to fill the vacancy.

A cable message from Geneva states that a coach filled with League of Nations officials capsized, injuring 23 persons, including Mrs. Chapman. No details as to the extent of tho injuries are furnished. Mrs. Chapman is tho wife of Mr. J. H. Chapman and daughter-in-law of Mr." and Mrs. W. L. H. Chapman, of Russell Street, Palmerston North. Before her marriage she was Miss G. Blacklock, of Wellington. Her husband is an old boy' of the Palmerston North Boys’ High School, and is the head of the Statistical Department of the League, and, with Mrs. Chapman, was accompanying officials of the Financial and Economic Sections who were en route to tho United States, where facilities have been granted to continue this work during the war period.
