French ’Chaser Sinks Another German Submarine

France bagged her third submarine in a few days when a 700-ton survey ship, unarmed in peacetime but converted to a submarinechaser, foiled a U-boat’s attempt to attack a convoy In the Channel. The survey ship’s lookout saw the track of a torpedo passing 90 feet ahead of the bow. The torpedo missed, but its track in the moonlight clearly showed the submarine’s position. The French skipper turned his ship round and proceeded at full speed along the torpedo’s track, at the end of which he dropped a depth charge. Oil bubbled up to the surfacr.
