Awapuni Horses for Otaki STING OUT OF GOING FOR FINAL TRIALS YESTERDAY’S PROGRAMME After drenching rain during the night the sting was out of the going at Awapuni yesterday morning and the conditions were perfect lor the final gallops of horses engaged at Otaki. The flags were over fifty feet out on the course proper and among the horses which worked particularly well were Ecstatic, Girl Pat and Silvanus, Lambourn and Or agon, Goldbum and Guiding Light. Hunting Loro (B. H. Morris) ran an easy lialf-milo in 58$ and ho was followed by Ecstatic (D. Redstone) and Laughing Lass (J. Pratt). With their light weights they were away quickly to run to the three in 30 and with Laughing Lass on the inner they turned for home together. They were kept going over the final bit and Laughing Lass was about a head to the good at the post, the time for the full distance being 1.21 2-5. Ecstatic will be ridden by Redstone at Otaki.

The Bigot (Morris) was given a strong working gallop and he went well to run the last five in 1.0.

Verey Lights was in front of All Blood at the end of a mile run in 1.56 2-5 and they finished well to cover the last three in 43 2-5. All Blood will be ridden by J. Chaplin in the hurdles at Otaki and ho should give a good account of himself. On Wednesday, with Chaplin up, he was schooled with Clarion Call (L Rohloff) and they gave a great exhibition over four hurdlos. Girl Pat and Silvanus were companions over a mile and again they galloped particularly well, coming home the last six in 1.22 2-5. Girl Pat was in front at the post, but the margin was very small. Silvanus is in the big race at Otaki. She has been working well lately and she would not surprise if she ran a good race. Disdain (Redstone) sprinted five furlongs on her own in 1.5 2-5 and it was easily the best of the morning over the distance.

Flammarion (Chaplin) was exercised and he pulled hard. Clarion Call (Morris) and Colonel Bogey (W. J. Broughton) were together during a working gallop over a mile, and they came home from the five in 1.12.

La Bru (Tattersall) was under restraint in running four in 56 3-5, and Pas de Cheval (C. B. Goulsbro) was not ridden out to cover five in 1.10 4-5.

Chary (Morris) and King's Mark (Chaplin) worked lazily over five and Aoronit and Bonnie Bunsby, who are coming to hand steadily, ran three in 41. Renascor (Tattersall) beat Fauvette (Moody) over seven in 1.42. Rollaway (Chaplin) and Waimutu (Tattersall) were on terms at the end of five run in 1.10 2-5, and Parian was not required to better even time over 1 The juveniles, Oragon (Broughton) and Lambourn (Morris), which are to have their first races at Woodville, are being given more strenuous tasks. On Tuesday they worked over four and yesterday they scampered three furlongs in better than 39 with little if anything between them at the finish.

Following close upon their heels was Goldburn (H. Stewart) and the Silverburn threc-year-old showed a nice turn of speed in completing the distance in 38 3-5. Stewart will ride her in the five-furlong event at Otaki. After getting away slowly at Levin she covered extra ground on the homo turn. She should do better than fifth at Otaki. Du Maurier (J. Williamson) worked alone over a mile in 1.52 3-5 and he finished brilliantly to cover tho last three in 40.

Guiding Light (Tattersall) and Thrasos (S. Anderson) were companions over seven, Boniden joining in at the half-mile to show the way for the rest of the journey. The time for the full distance was 1.35 and Guiding Light ran the last three in 41, which was good.

Alchemic (Morris) sprinted half a mile. He is long-striding and a very deceptive galloper and it was surprising to. find that he ran the last three in 39 2-5. Ho is to bo nominated for Woodville.

Beaupartir was given nice steady pace work.

Final Gallops at Trentham

CENTRE IS WELL REPRESENTED AT OTAKI The following comment is by "Rangatira," of the Post:— Trentham stables have over a score of horses among the acceptances for the Otaki meeting and the majority of them were sent on galloping trials yesterday morning. After the rain of the past few days the plough is out of commission, and tho work was done on the outside of the grass, on which the going was good but dead. The weather was fine early, but rain set in again later in tho morning. Dainty Sue (A. J. Newnham), kicked up at the finish, beat Prediction (H. Duncan) by half a length over seven furlongs in lmin. 31sec., the last halfmile in 53sec., but it was a good effort by tho Otaki candidate. Silver River (Newnham), who schooled well with Good Sun on Wednesday, ran six furlongs, in 1.19, the last half-mile in 53 sec. Good Sun (H. Guppy), picked up by Blue Border (L. T. Nesbitt) between the four and the three, ran a mile in 1.47, the last half-mile in 53sec. Siegmund (S. G. Robinson), picked up by Gothic (T. Biggs) between the seven and six furlongs, traversed a mile i" 1.46, the last seven fuilongs in 1.32, and tho last half-mile in 521. Gothic finished half a length in front, but Siegmund was quickly closing on his companiou.

Wakarara (R. Bucknell) was two lengths ahead of Tolamon (S. Wilson), after six furlongs in 1.20, the last halfmilo in 53$sec. Colsan Maid (Wilson) ran half a mile in 52sec. Coronado (F. Boyer) boat Royal Portrait (J. McCauley) by*two lengths over half a inilo in 51$sec.

Boomerang (J. Lawler) was several lengths in front of Galteemore (A Foster) at the ond of six furlongs in 1.18, the last half-mile in 52sec. Floral Robo (K. Smith) ran seven furlongs alone in 1.325, the last half-mile in 54$ sec. Alunga (J. Hayes) was sprinted down the straight. Balgowlah (Robinson) and Acrobat (R. A. Hawkings) started from, the five furlongs, but Acrobat stumbled and dropped back, Balgowlah going on to run tho distance in 1.5, the last halfmile in 52sec. Acrobat recovered and' nearly caught tho filly, running his last throe furlongs in 37sec. Trench Law (P. Williams) was a length in front of Ruling Star (Warren) after six furlongs in I.lßs, the last halfmile in 535. Ruling Star bolted before reaching the post, but he then waited for his mate. Defy (P. Burgess), who is difficult to hold because of a sore mouth, sprinted away from Warehi (J. Nicolson) as soon as they were on the track, but she was eased up after running about three furlongs and did the rest of the gallop at three-parts pace. Siglow was exorcised on tho centre of the track. Though he figures among the Otaki acceptors, H. A. Telford stated that he would be racing only Silver River and Prediction. Siglow has dono well since Levin. BENEFIT TO CLUB Tho incident in which the riders of tho third and fourth horses—the only other starters—in the Tradesmen’s Handicap failed to weigh-in, at tho Southland meeting on Saturday was rather an interesting one. As a coneequonco both horses forfeited any claim they had on the stako money, and prize money to the first and second horses only was payable. The impression was gained that the third stake of j-10 would be divided between the first and second horses, but it is now given out that it is retained by the club. This decision has been made in accordance with tho Rules of Racing. A MASSIVE COLT An interesting daily visitor to tho Riccarton tracks is Lord Kinnoull, a two-year-old brother to Kinnoull. He ia a solidly-built colt, and is not likely to come to hand until next season. He is owned by Mr. D. Grant, who also has in D. Cotton's stable a two-year-old by Pink Coat from Keel Row, dam of Rebel Lad. He will race as Highland Dance. IDENTIFICATION DISCS When in tho saddling paddock prior to big races at Flemington, horses wear headbands bearing their names. In South Africa they carry placards attached to their saddle cloths, these being removed after the parade. FOR PATRIOTIC FUNDS The Wairio Jockey Club, which will run its annual meeting on January 20 for patroitic funds, has increased the stakes to £IOSO, as compared with £IOOO last season. AUSTRALIAN JOCKEY IN JAVA W. Eastburn, an Australian jockey, who returned to Sydney last week from Java, stated that during the season he headed the list with 36 winning rides. “I secured 89 rides during the season, which runs from March to November," he said. “There is no racing during the monsoon season, as the weather is too unreliable. Mr. E. Edoudraad, who invited me to Java, has 15 horses. The tracks in Java are beautifully kept," he added. "Native labour is cheap and the grass is kept down by men who swing large knives. The courses are as attractive as those in Australia, but they are much smaller. There are good tracks at Batavia, Sourabaya, Bandoeng, Djoca, Samarang, Malang and elsewhere. The best are a mile in circumference." Eastburn was in Java in 1936 and visited Africa in 1937.

Ellerslie starting times for to-morrow are as f0110w:—12.5, Melroso Maiden; 12.50, Milford Handicap; 1.35, Tiri Hurdles; 2.20 Alison Cup; 3.5, Cambria Handicap; 3.55, Takapuna Plate; 4.40, Cheltenham Handicap; 5.25, Ponui Handicap.
