Junior Athletes Excel

GOOD PERFORMANCES AT KIA TOA CLUB’S SPORTS Juniors were prominent at the meeting of the Kia Toa Amateur Athletic Club at the Sportsground last evening. A. G. Cozens, who was runner-up at the West Coast (N. 1.) Centre junior championships last season, and is still a junior, made easy work of the half mile, winning in good style. This is the third 880 yards he has won this season. D. Hopkirk, who is only 15, did very well in the long jump, reaching 18ft. Bin. D. Ryan, the tall junior sprinter, is improving steadily, and won both the 100 yards and 220 yards in fine style. Miss J. Hill won the women’s 220 yards from the back mark, conceding fairly largo handicaps. Results were:— 100 yards: D. Ryan (7) 1, C. Evans (9i) 2, S. Cutler (9) 3; time, 10 l-sgec. 220 yards: D. Ryan (14) 1, S. MeVicar (22) 2, S. Cutler (17) 3; time, 23 3-ssec. 440 yards: F. Seifert (64) 1, C. Evans (36) 2, D. Hopkirk (45) 3; time, 51 3-5 sec. 880 yards: A. Cozens (42) 1, C. McVicar (25) 2, L. Hawthorne (28) 3; time, 2min 2 2-ssec. Cozens steamed away in the last lap to win by 15 yards from McVicar, who was 20 yards ahead of Hawthorne.
