A convincing demonstration of tho efficiency of Wellington’s defences against naval attack was given at the week-end when exercises in which the three services co-operated were held off the heads. H.M.S. Leith, representing an enemy cruiser, engaged the batteries nt Fort Dorset and Palmer Head in mock bombardments and also attempted to enter the harbour under cover of darkness.
