Mr. A. Crawford has been elected chairman of the trustees of the Wanganui Museum iu succession to Mr. Hone Gibbons, who had bold the office since 1933. Mr. W. H. Dr. R. H. W. Strang, a prominont dental specialist, of Bridgeport, United States, passed through Auckland by the Monterey on Iris way to attend th« Australian Dental Congress at Melbourne. Ho was met by officials of the Auckland branch of the New Zealand Dental Association.

Mr. H. W. Crawford, managing director of the Northern Publishing Co., Whangarei, expired without warning at 8 o'clock on Saturday morning. Tho late Mr. Crawford was born at Alaungakaramea 57 years ago. He was a schoolteacher for 20 years and was first assistant at the Whangarei primary school when he bought a controlling interest in the publishing company. He was one of the best-known public men in the Northland and one of the Dominion’s most popular newspapermen.

The death occurred at Sydney on Saturday at the age of 75 of Mr. James Ashton, a notable figure in tho commercial and political life of New South Wales, lie was chairman of the Commercial Banking Company, Sydney, Limited, and until recently chairman of the Mutual Life Citizens' Assurance Company, Limited, also a member of the Legislative Council and a former Minister of Lands.
