Manawatu Hnnt Meeting SEMI-FINAL GALLOPS AT AWAPUNI COURSE PROPER NOT OPEN Heavy rain during tlie week-end did not improve tno Awapuni course proper, and a fall of snow early yesterday morning put tne finishing touenes on it and it was not available for tne semi-tinal gallops which tools place on the trial grass. The going on the trial grass was fairly good, but tne hurdles had been removed and there was no schooling. None of L. G. Morris’ horses was given a serious task, but Manteau was sprinted down the straight, moving very nicely. Hunting Lore, looking none the worse for his race at Martou, was exercised, but Laughing Lass, Disdain, Malik Kafur and La Dm were allowed to stretch out over three but without being after time. Royal Sign was sprinted down the straight, moving nicely throughout. Onanau (E. Stewart) was not required to do better than even time over live, and Hanover (B. Anderson) was given a working gallop over six. Ruaform and f ine Gold were responsible for a smart effort over live and the former linished in front, running the distance in 1.11 2-5, the last three in 42 2-5. Patahi (W. J. Broughton) and Yed Prior (J. Chaplin) sprinted three in 44 and although the former was in front at the post, led Prior made up a lot of ground over the last bit. Amyas Leigh (A. McDonald), who had his first race at Marton, broke 42 over three, going well. Raeburn (McDonald) and Laughing Chief (R. Ireland) wero worked over a mile, and they wore timed to run the last seven in L 45 2-5. Laughing Chief got the better of the start, but Raeburn was with him at the seven. From that peg they ran to the three in 58 and they finished strongly without being under pressure. Raeburu is to start in the hack sprint on {Saturday. It will be his first race since ho came over from Australia nearly a year ago. He has settled down since he came to Awapuni and he has improved a good deal during the past month. A good elfort over six was that of Parian and Girl Pat, but they carried light weights. They were timed to run the first threo in 41 and they came homo in 43 to complete in 1.24. Parian is engaged in the maiden on Saturday and Girl Pat in the hack sjwint. Colibri (Broughton) and Fauvette (Tattersall), both maiden candidates, recorded comparatively good time over five and they were together at the linish after running the last three in 42 2-5 to complete in 1.10 3-5. Old fciurey, who looks well, was given a working gallop over six, going along as if he really liked the conditions. The best seven of the morning was recorded by Beyfried (VV. Jenkins), Cuisinier (E. Tcmperton) and Aurora’s Star (Brougutonj and they finished full of running in that order and at short intervals. The first half-mile took them 56 and they came come in 42 2-5 to complete in 1.38 2-5. Old Bill and Moradabad were given “pipe-owners” and Tide waiter (Jenkins), after beiug exercised on the sand, ran five in 1.13, going fast over the first two furlongs. Grindlay has taken over the premises in Hawera lately vacated by E. Fryer. Grindlay will train a coming two-year-old purchased by Mr. W. Simpson, Wavcrloy, who formerly raced Settlement; also a youngster by Iliad from the Claro mare, Royal Favour. Will Not Ride at Christchurch Hunt Meeting. The jockey L. J. Ellis suffered a recurrence of his eye trouble after riding at Washdyke, and he will have to miss tho Christchurch Hunt Club’s meeting on Saturday. There is a possibility also that he may not be ablo to go to Australia to. ride Defaulter and, that being so, his place will be taken by A. E. Ellis.
