From Our Own Correspondent. Cold, .showery weather, interspersed with frosts, prevailed during the week, 'and the week-end was very cold. A fresu in the river left a quantity of wood on both beaches, nevertheless the back yaru thief still continues to make his rounds. Losses reported include several lots oi totara posts and in one case some timber. On one occasion the contents of an outside safe were rifled, and the sole occupant of the house was deprived of his week-end provisions. Something in tne nature of a stampede took place one night recently when an unchained dog took o the intruder, who stood not on the order of his going, but made a rapid get-away through the park. In practically every instanco where material has been removed the thief has been able to approach and leave per medium of the Ha*. Reserve.

Card Evening Airs. F. Shortt, assisted by her daughter, Mrs. J. Evans, was hostess at the weekly card tournament, held at her residence on Tuesday evening last week. The night was very cold, but Jack Frost had no place indoors, where a cheery fire was appreciated to the full, and round which the guests gathered for supper. Prizes were allocated as follows: Airs. W. Ingram, Airs. S. Rosvall and Airs. G. Wells tied in (he ladies’ section, and in a cut-off were placed in that order; Air. P. Daniell 1, Air. T. Shortt 2. Consolation prizes were awarded to Airs. Western and Mr. Stackhouse. Mrs. W. Ingram and Airs. S. Rosvall will be hostesses for tlie next two Saturday evenings.

Mrs. J. Bald was a recent visitor to Wellington, where her daughter, Mrs. J. Stopforth, is seriously ill in a private hospital.

Mr. and Mrs. A. Stackhouse have recently returned from a short visit to Napier. Mrs. J. Evans and small sop John, who have been visiting Airs. F. Shortt, have now returned to Palmerston North.

Aliss Riddick, of Wellington, was the week-end guest of her uncle and aunt, Air. and Airs. \V. Ingram.

Winners in the Labour Party’s cribbage tournament were Air. C. Wells and Mr. J. Smith, and In Friday evening’s euchre Mrs. Bald and Mr. O. Coles were the successful players.
