Little Tough Guys in “Code of the Streets”

(Kosy: Screening Friday.) In “Cod 3 of the Streets,’’ with James McCallion as their new leader, the Little Tough Guys demonstrate how sordid environment influences the development of a boy’s character and outlook on life. Harry Carey turns in a warmly sympathetic performance as the police lieutenant who arrests a boy for murder and then risks his job trying to save his prisoner from the electric chair. Frankie Thomas is seen as an amateur sleuth who joins forces with the Tough Guys to seek the real killer and aid his father, Carey, who has been demoted to patrolman. Leon Ames, who came to Hollywood after many successes on Broadway, makes tho most of his role as trie big time gambling king. Dorothy Arnold lends sparkling beauty as the hat-check girl p.nd Juanita Quigley. Highlight scenes include one on which Paul Fix warns his brother against tho bad influence of the slums. In another sequence the kids force a confession from Ames while holding him prisoner in their alley hideout.
