Kookaburras and Kangaroos for Centennial
BUT NO KOALAS OR LYRE BIRDS United Press Association.—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright. Received Monday, 11.35 pja. MELBOURNE, July 24. A request by the New Zealand Government for a loa:i of twelve koala bears, three lyre drds, three native cats and twe!«a squirrels for the Centennial Exhibition has been refused by the Victorian Chief Secretary (Mr. Bailey.) He has, however, agreed to send six kookaburras, four kangaroos and four wallabies. Mr. Bailey explained that the lyre birds would be moulting at Exhibition time. In any case their 1 export was against public policy. The same applied to the koalas which also were shy and sensitive, 1 and it was doubtful whether they would stand sea transport. Squirrels and native cats were shy and unsuitable for public exhibition. i
