Western Samoan Commemorative Stamps
Designs for a set of four stamps to be issued i'or \Vestern Samoa in commemoration of the 25 years of New Zealand’s control of the mandated territory, which wero early this year forwarded to tho printers, have satisfactorily transferred in the engraving medium and proofs of tho finished stamps have now been received by the
Post and Telegraph Department. Tho set will be issued on August 29, 1939. Photographs of the four stamps are published in this issue on the pictorial page on this page. The stamps, which will be on sale i'or approximately three months, are o. tho denominations Id, 3Jd, and 7d. The Id and lid designs were prepared by Air James Berry, of Wellington, and the 2£d and 7d designs by Air L. C. Mitchell, also of Wellington. The Id stamp shows a view of a typical Samoan coastal village and is printed with scarlet border and green centre. The. ltd stamp bears a map of tho territory and is printed with brown border and pale blue centre. The 2\ 1 stamp, with sepia centre and deep blue border, depicts the Samoan siva or dancing party, and tho 7d, with violet centre and black bo/dcr, bears a portrait of Robert Louis Stevenson, who spent the last years of his life in Samoa.
