Anglican Maori Mission Fund

EUCHRE PARTY AND DANCE AT KAKARIKI Sponsored by Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Durie, of Feilding, a successful euchre party and dance was held at Kakariki on Friday evening last in aid of the Anglican Maori Mission Fund. Despite the short notice and the fact that it was the first night of the fortnightly series, tho attendance was quite good. The prize-winners of the euchre included:— Ladies, Mrs. Bevan I, Mrs. R. Penehira 2, Mrs. H. Hakaraia consolation; men, Mr. E. Stevens 1, Mr. B. Rauhihi 2, Mr. J. M. Durie consolation. The dancing competitions were won as follow:—Lucky Gay Gordons, Mrs. G. Lawrence and Mr. T. Rauhihi; lucky spot waltz, Miss N. Davies and Mr. V. Dais; Monte Carlo waltz, Mrs. L. Hakaraia and Master Lew Hakaraia.

The programme included a number of vocal items. Miss A. Hika rendered one of those old but ever-popular Maori ditties entitled “Maoriland Melody.” For an encore she sang two other Maori songs, “E Pari Ra” and “Hoki Hoki To mi Mai. ’ ’ Thu audience was delighted and accorded the singer an ovation. Mr. Inuwai Lawton gave a vocal version of tho popular “My Own” and for an encore sang in swingtime ‘‘ A Tisket A Tasket” and a song from the Western ranches, “Ride, Tenderfoot, Ride.” These numbers also provoked enthusiastic applause.

The dancing continued until the early hours of the morning and a dainty supper was served by the ladies. Mr. J. Ashton’s orchestra supplied the dancing music, while Mr. D. Durie acted as M.C. alternately with Mr. B. King, of Aorangi. Those present included Mesdames Penehira, in black satin; Hakaraia, white satin; Rogers, floral rayon; Bishop, floral crepe; E. Stevens, floral crepe; Fergusson, black lace; H. Rauhihi, figured ninou; L. Hakaraia, floral rayon; G. Bevan, floral crepe; Misses S. Campbell, silk crepe; M. Ellery, evening gown; A. Hiha, black; K. Ellery, black; W. Lawrence, red marocain; Corbett, black costume; Laura Hartley (Marton), navy costume; Williams, navy costume; Hallet (Taupo), champagne; E. Armstrong, black lace; E. Rogers, -white satin; T. Noffky, red rayon; D. Armstrong, red taffeta; M. Winterburn, grey costume; J. Winterburn (Tokorangi), wool agfalaine; R. Williams, sea blue costume; R. Te Kuru, black costume; Myrtle Allen (Auckland), red satin; E. Stantiall, green with gold trimmings; Phyllis Wasson (Auckland), navy and gold trimmings; H. Fergusson, black costume; C. Hakaraia, red rayon; and Lillian Hartley (Marton), black crepe.
