Rugby Results of games played in the Horo■wlienua Rujsby competiUon on Saturday afternoon were as follows: Shannon won by default from Fox ton. who have withdrawn from the senior competition; KukuJNlanakau defeated Kahui, B—6; Wanderers defeated Athletic, S—o. Badminton On Thursday night last a visit was paid to the local badminton club by,four inembers of the Manawatu Central (P.N.) Club, Messrs. W. Jensen (hon. secretary), K. Hill, C. Sheerin and H. Margison. The \ isitors played several demonstration games in addition to be partnered with local members. For C. Sheerin, in particular, a bright future in the badminton world is predicted, and only recently this player, whose exhibition on the Shannon court has since given rise to much appreciative comment, met and defeated 12. A. Koussell, who is a member of the New Zealand representative team which left last week for the Austrolian tour. The visitors were welcomed by the club captain. w. Jensen replied on behalf of his clubmates, thanking the Shannon Club for its hospitality. To-night, Tuesday, an inter-club match will be played on the local court between Man aka u and Shannon the latter's representatives being Misses D. Tretnewan, G. Forbes, T. Moynihan, J. Roach, Mrs. D. Gyde and Mrs. H. Fope. -Miss J, Ketter and Mrs. \V. Radford, jnr., are emergencies. The men are Messrs H. Pope, H. Hermansson, V. Tippler, A. S. Hyde, X. Retter, D. Gyde. L. Small and \V. Radford are the emergencies. , , Boys’ and Girls’ Agricultural Club Under the auspices of the Horowhenua lioys' and Girls’ Agricultural Club, root • growing and home garden competitions j for the 1939-40 season will be held among ; children from Standards 111 to VI in the primary schools in the Horowhenua district and those in the primary department of the district high schools. In the root growing competition, for convenience of working, schools will be divided into three group*, with centres in Shannon, Levin and To Horo. The following roots have been selected Mangolds (prizewinner), swedes (superlative), carrots (white Belgian), the competitor being allowed one kind only. The Wellington Education Board will supply certificates to the best competitors in each group, and the inspection and the judging of fhe plots will be carried out by the board s inspector. Plots will be inspected when established—if possible, In December—for the purpose of advising the competitors on the management of the crop, and the Judging will take place in June or July, 1940. Seeds and manure, together with instructions for use, will be supplied to all competitors free of Competitors may have the heavy digging and the preliminary of the plots done for them but all subsequent work such as tillage and seed sowing must be done -by the competitor, who is also required tu keep a crop record on a form to be provided. The record will be written out in schqol under the supervision of the teacher frobi notes made at home by the competitor. In addition, a home garden competition has been approved by the agricultural club for children attending the following schools: Shannon. Tokomaru, Waikanae, Makerua, Manakau, Levin District High School, Koputaroa, Ohau, Muhunoa, Poroutawhao, Paraparaurau. Reikorangi, Opiki and Otaki. Entries from intending competitors will be received until and including Tuesday, August 1. by Mr. T. Chipper, District High School. Levin. Mr. Chipper is hon. secretary of the home gardens section of the club. The areas to be cultivated should approximate the following minimum sizes: Vegetable gardens, 19S square feet (IBft. x lift.); flower gardens, 140 square feet (14ft x 10ft.). Larger areas may be cultivated if deaired, and competitors may enter in either class or both classes. Competitors may have assistance in digging and draining, but all other work must be done entirely by the children. Notebook records must be kept and these are to be produced for inspection whenever the garden Is visited. The board’s instructor in agriculture will visit the gardens for tlie official judging about the middle of December. Certificates will be issued to all competitors gaining 80 per cent, of marks in the final judging. These will be specially endorsed in the case of winning first place, second and third, in both vegetable and flower gardens, subject to the number of entries.
