Vice-Regal Visit to Cook Group
GOODWILL OP THE PEOPLE Received Friday, 7 p.m. RAROTONGA, July. 20. In the nu-Jicrn Cook Group their Excellencies received a warm welcomo at the islands of I’enrhyn, Rakahanga, Manihiki and Pukapuka and derived much pleasuro from their visit. At each island there wero tho usual native feasts, dancing and singing, and their Excellencies received many gifts denoting tho goodwill of the people. At Penrhyn the Excellencies were greatly interested in witnessing pearl-shell diving in the lagoon.
H.M.S. Leander arrived at Rarotonga yesterday afternoon, but on account of the weather conditions at the anchorage, she sailed in tho early hours this morning for Bora Bora.
A radio message received by the Press Association from tho Achilles records tumultuous welcomes by the entire inhabitants of tho islands visited. Many of tho smaller islands had never before been visited by the Governor-General. Lady Galway accompanied tbo Governor-General to all the islands and was undeterred by the danger of shooting the reefs in native out.’fggers or open whaleboats.
