When Grade Fields first met the famous actor, Sir Gerald du Maurier, she was fresh from Lancashire and Tather doubtful about the huge and wicked city of London. Sir Gerald du Maurier asked her to appear in a straight part in one of his plays, and they met to talk over plans. Grade took the part and rehearsals began. One day at lunch, Sir Gerald du Maurier took a ring from his pocket, tossed it across the table to her and said: “Wear that for me—-it only cost £700." Grade was horrified, believing that she had come across some of London’s sinfulness. “Don't be a little fool," Sir Gerald said when she refused, and Gracie proceeded to slap his face—hard. The famous actor laughed loudly —then Grade saw the box from which the ring was taken and found it camo from Woolworth'sl After that tho two were firm friends until Sir Gerald’s death—and he always declared that her 4*g wras very easy to pull.
