Women’s Institutes

KAIRANGA A number of visitors wero welcomed at the July meeting, over which Mrs. McClelland presided. Tho motto was “Trifles make perfection, but perfection is no trifle." An apology for absence was received from Mrs. G. Davey. A new member, Airs. Jewell, was welcomed and also a former member, Airs. McCool. The programme for tho forthcoming birthday ball Was discussed and arrangements mado for the contribution of items by several wellknown Palmerston North and district artists. It is proposed this year that instead of purchasing the materials for the birthday cake from the W.I. funds each member should contribute Gd. Admission prices decided were 3s and 2s | Gd. Tho August meeting will be superseded by preparations for the ball, only institute business being dealt with. The 1939 flower show schedule is completed and will be published shortly. The rollcall, “A girl’s name," proved very popular. Tho speaker for the month was Aliss Grant, whose appointment as president of the recently-named Alanawatu Federation was a matter for congratulations from, the institute. Miss Grant discussed affairs pertaining to the movement, also the good that members could do outside of their gatherings by striving to seo tho best in others and showing tolerance and respect for their opinions. The speaker was followed with keen interest by those present. This month’s competitions, judged by Aliss Grant, resulted: Best bloom, Mrs. H. Turner 1, Mrs. Mitchell 2, Mrs. Kilgour 3; puff pastry jam tarts, Mrs. Mitchell 1, Mrs. L. Clark 2, Mrs. J. Burmiester 3 (seniors), Miss E. Burmiester I, Miss J. Kilgour 2 (juniors). The hostesses were Mesdames Mitchell, Mallett and H. Turner. RANGIWAHIA A very large attendance of members was presided over by Miss McKenzie at the July meeting. The delegates, Mesdames Hewison and Lancaster, were chosen for the group meeting to be held at Apiti on August 1 and quite a number of members intend competing with knitting. Some good handcrafts will be taken also. The drama circle reported good progress and teams will bo sent to Mangaweka, Taihape and Palmerston North in tho next month. The local drama competition will be held later. The competitions were won by Mesdames Hewison 3, Brenncll 2 and J. H. Thompson 3 for article made from scraps of wool, and Mesdames J. ,H. Thompson 1 and McMillan 2 for honey buttons made from recipe in W.I. cookery book. Miss McKenzie introduced Mrs. Poananga and Mrs. Waaka from the Awahuri Institute and welcomed Mrs. Haythorne, a former Rangiwahia member. Airs. Waaka sang several songs, which were very much enjoyed. Airs. Poananga gavo a very interesting talk on her recent trip to America and was listened to with rapt attention. Members wished there had been more time available and showed their appreciation in no uncertain manner. Mrs. Haythorne extended greetings to the Rangiwahia Institute in the Maori language, and many members realised their shortcomings in not knowing something of the beautiful language ot their own country. After tho National Anthem was sung afternoon tea was served. NGAWAPURUA The July meeting was held on Wednesday, Mrs. Coulter presiding over u fair attendance and welcomed visitors. Apologies wero received from Mesdames B. Clark, Williams and AlacKay. Tho motto was “Toil only gives the soul to shine." The roll-calls, “Cures for colds" and “My favourite winter hot tea dish," gave very useful hints. Mrs. Reid gave an interesting demonstration on cane work. The competition for fancy work picture resulted: Airs. C. Knapp and Mrs. Singers equal I, Aliss M. Knapp 2, Coulter 3; competition for gems, Airs. J. Singers 1, Aliss M. Knapp 2, Airs. Olsen-3; best bloom, Airs. Mac Kay; jar of flowers, Aliss M. Knapp. Mrs. Coulter moved a vote of thanks to Airs. Reid for her interesting demonstration, and also a vote ot thanks to Airs. Johnston and Airs. Brewer for judging the competitions. The hostesses wero Mesdames C. Judd, C. Alorgan, Olsen, and Aliss I. Alorgan. GLEN OROUA At the July meeting Airs. Boswell presided in tho absence of tho president over an excellent attendance. Apologies fof absence were received from Mesdames Boswell, snr., Milne and Wheeler. It was decided to send 2s 6d towards the cost of tho Centennial institute exhibits. Notice was received of the grbup meeting which is to tako place at Kongo tea on September 20. The competitions for that meeting are to be for a man’s knitted sleeveless pullover (senior and junior), plato of shortbread (senior and junior), two classes of shoulder sprays (ono flowers must be out of competitor’s own garden, the other ono to be open). A competition for a framed picture was won by Airs. Amies, Rongotea. Airs. C. Hamlin thanked all who had worked so much in

any way in helping tho institute to make the two displays at the A. and P. Show, especially the members who arranged the stalls. During the afternoon a demonstration was given by Airs. Larsen on making paper flowers, which afterwards she sold for tho institute funds, and special thanks were conveyed to her. The trading stall for the day was in aid of funds to pay show expenses, good results were shown and it is to be continued. Competitions for the day resulted: Petticoat of washing crepo do chene (lace trimmed), Airs, tichaw 1, Mrs. Vallendcr 2, Airs. Lawlor 3; best bloom from garden, Mrs. Saunders 1, Aliss AI. Vallender 2, Mrs. Larsen 3; apple tart (pastry top and bottom),' Mrs. Saunders 1, Mrs. Boswell 2, Mrs Lawlor 3. The hostesses were Alesdames Grayson, Herdmans, Hamlin and Miss Hart. Competitions for August will b* gingerbread (no eggs), man’s sleeveless pullover; demonstration, Miss Farmer, organdie work; hostesses, Mesdames Hamlin, Hill, Misses Huddleston and Kempton.
