Women’s Institutes

LONGBURN A fine afternoon greeted the Women’s Institute for their July meeting. There was a good attendance, while visitors wero present from Linton and Tokomaru. Mrs. A. pierard presided. Apologies for absence wero roceived from Mesdames Bonner, Sansom and Miss Zurcher. Invitations were roceived from Kairanga, Whakarongo and Aokautere Institutes to their respective birthday functions. Mesdames Nicol and Murray were appointed to the committee for the next group rally. It was decided to forward tho required fee to the Centennial Committee. An excellent demonstration was given by Mrs. Tremaine, of Linton, on the making of soft toys. A splendid collection of toys was exhibited, and the members greatly appreciated the trouble taken by Mrs. Tremaine, who was accorded a vote of thanks and presented with a posy of spring flowers. A toy was presented by Mrs. Tremaine for the funds, and Mrs. Pierard presented an organdie handkerchief sachet for tho tea towel fund. Members wero reminded of the bring and buy stall at the August meeting for a donation to tho federation. The competitions resulted: —Knitted cardigan or juniper, Mrs. Chamberlain I and 2, Mrs. Young 3; ginger cake, Mrs. Nicol ], Mrs. Rowland 2, Mrs. Holland 3;

bloom, Mrs. Rowland 1, Mrs. Fletcher 2, Mrs. Stephenson 3. The competitions for August will be: Boiled raisin loaf, something new from something old, and best bloom. Thanks were extended to the hostesses, Mesdames Murray and Stephenson, also to Mesdames Tremaine and McNab, who acted as judges fo# tho competition. In the supper room the tables were beautifully laid and a largo birthday cake held pride of place. Tho

usual toasts were honoured and the guests of the evening suitably replied, thanking all for tho lovely gifts they had received. An enjoyable evening was brought to a close with tho singing of “Auld Lang Syne.”
