Payment of Volunteers Who Work in Factories
POLICY NOT DECIDED Present at the monthly meeting of tho Mauawatu and West Coast Dairy Companies’ executive yesterday were Messrs. S. A. Broadbeit (chairman), C. G. C. Dormer, J. Boyce, P. Hansen, S. E. Algar and R. Craig. An inquiry was made by Mr. Dermer as to whether any companies had decided to pay men who had joined the Territorials and gone to camp. He thought that they were asking the factories to pay.
Mr. Boyce doubted whether it was fair that the factories should have to pay as they received pay in the camps. Mr. Algar thought that the factories should pay. Mr. Boyce asked how the assistants who were away were to be replaced. Some of them on the other hand had quite long holidays. Mr. Craig said that his company had not yet discussed the matter. Mr. Dermer remarked that they had been approached. At the suggestion of Mr. Algar the secretary is to make inquiries from the various factories, it being mentioned that in some cases what was suggested was that the difference in pay should be mado up.
