WAIRARAPA DEFEAT BUSH 9—o On Saturday afternoon a Bush Rugby representative team met Wairarapa on tho Eketahuna Domain. The day was grey and showery, and just before the two teams went on to tho field snow began to fall. Tho ground was very heavy due to the inclement weather during the past fortnight. The attendance was poor, there being only about 500 people present. In this representative game Bush suffered their first defeat this season by nine points to nil. The outstanding players for Bush were C. Rosyth and T. Ve..y, and for Wairarapa O’Callaghan, who saved his side on numerous occasions, while Howard and Hatton were in form. Bninton was very fast and his kicking was of a high standard. Two curtain-raisers preceded the big game. The first was the final of tho soven-a-side third grade championship between Mangatainoka and Eketahuna, for which Mr. W. Ryan refereed. Tho following were the teams:— Mangatainoka: Bicknell, Fulton (captain), Guinnane, Howell, Swanney, Reichenbach, Scales. Eketahuna: Morrison (captain), Kcwlcy, Steer (2), Evans, Ryan, Olsen. After two spells of soven minutes no score was registered. In tho next two spells of thro3 minutes Bicknell gained an uncon vox ted try for Mangatainoka, and Morrison scored for Eketahuna, but H. Btccr failed to convert. In the final few minutes of tho game Howell gained the line, making Mangatainoka the winners of the championship. From tho line-out Wairarapa secured, but were wellmarked and play was carried on in midfield, where Hatton received an injury to his knee, but after medical attention he was able to continue. taken near Bush’s goal-line, but tho attack was smothered and tho ball was taken at tho feet of Bush to over halfway. A free kick was awarded to Bush near green’s twenty-five on the far side of the field, but Hajf’s good effort again went wide.

Bush held play in green’s twenty-five until Hatton secured tho ball, and after a nice run kicked the ball well downfield. Tho half-time score was:

O’Callaghan cleared and play went back to half-way. Again Bush started a fresh attack and Rosyth was in the thick of it and passed to Twentyman, who was within ten yards of the green’s goal-line ■when he was grounded and tho ball was sent out to Henderson, who kicked to half-way. The play was returned and a scramble took place near green’s line. A scrum was ordered, but the ball was picked up by Wairarapa and booted to half-way. Bush took play down again to gicen’s twenty-five, but Wairarapa defended well and the ball was taken deep into Bush territory to hold play thera for somo time. Hanson then took a pass from Brown and crossed tho tine. Brunton took tho kick, but failed. Wairarapa 6, Bush 0.

Bush struggled to gain ground right from the kick-off. Verry was working hard and, along with Lett, was responsible for many good movements. Wairarapa cleared and play was taken well upfield. A freo kick was awarded greens and Brunton put a beautiful shot over to bring the score to: Wairarapa 9, Bush 0.

Time was now near at hand. Bush were very unlucky not to score when, from a passing rush, the ball was taken by Twentyman, but ho was pushed out. A freo kick was awarded Wairarapa and Brunton found the lino with a long shot. From the line-out green secured and tho play was taken well into Bush’s territory, but the backs held. A free kick was awarded Bush and Staples kicked well downfield, but the ball was returned to over twenty-five, where a scrum was ordered. Tho ball was taken by Burse, who kicked for the line, bringing the game to a close with tho final score: Wairarapa 9, Bush 0.
