Vast Network of Espionage Alleged
“ABUSING GERMAN HOSPITALITY" United Tress Association —By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright. Received Sunday, 9.20 p.m. BERLIN, July 8. Temporarily turning from encirclement the whole weight of the German press has been flung into a campafgn accusing Britain of building up a ' ast network of espionage throughout Germany by using consulates and passport control offices. Flaring headlines on the front pages give prominence to an official announcement that the Reich has requested Britain to recall the Vienna Consul (Mr. Donald Gainer) who is alleged to be involved in espionage. Mr. Gainer has already returned to London. The headlines in Hitler's Yolkisclier Beobaehter say: “Britain's official representatives are the strongholds of espionage." The Boersen Zeitung declares “Britain is abusing German hospitality. Even the highest representatives are involved in the espionage scandal." The official Deutsche Dlenst says: •‘lt is intolerable that the consular service should be saturated with professional spies and secret agents. Britain is in a mental state of morbid distrust and exaggerated fear, but primarily in order further to poison th<y international atmosphere she is now expelling innb cent and irreproachable Germans."
