Some interesting particulars about smoking figured in a London correspondent’s letter to a New Zealand paper the other day. Tho writer (claiming tc know), declares that English women are the heaviest smokers, of their sex, the world over; that soldiers and outdoor workers are the heaviest malo smokers in England; and that English parsons smoke more than any other class of men. As for tobacco (this has been noted before) there is less demand for the coarser brands than formerly, tho general preference now being for better quality lines. The same tendency, it is interesting to note, is in evidence in New Ze a land, and has been over since ** toasted” made its appearance. In fact, the five toaited brands, Cut Plug No. 10 (Bullshead), Navy Cut No. 3 (Bulldog), Cavendish, Riverhead Gold and Desert Gold, may be said to have educated the public taste, and created a demand for “the best,’* Not only are these five blends of the highest grade, but being practically free from nicotine (eliminated by toasting) they cannot harm the smoker even though he smokes to excess!

NED CUTTLE’S EASY WIN MAJORITY SCORES IN SPRINT RECORD YEAR FOR CLUB (Special to “Times.") Bitter weather prevailed for the conclusion of the Wellington winter meeting and the course was very heavy and slushy. There was a big attendance, and the good totalisator turnover meant that this season has been a record for turnover in the history of the club, beating the boom year 1920-2 L Carle won the Winter Hurdles in fine style and the Winter Oats went to Ned Cuttle, who scored the most decisive win of the meeting. The totalisator for tho day handled £82,551, against £79,304; for the meeting, £197,238 10s, against £177,515, an increase of £19,723 10s. Likes the Going Handling the ground splendidly, Chat won tho Talavera Hurmes, not by much, but nevertheless fairly decisively. Whakao, Jewelled Girdle and Vantoon were among tho early leaders, but along the back Chat and Erebus became prominent and Ponty was nicely placed. Chat went into tho lead five furlongs from home and was never headed, eventually holding off Vantoon and Tutor to win by a little over a length. Jewelled Girdle beat the rest and then came Awhiowhio, Export and Ponty. Erebus was beaten by the going. Ponty looked a probability till tho straight was reached and he was struggling then. Mount Val fell at the last hurdle. Chat paid a good dividend. Form Horse Wins A form horse scored when Lady Tinkle just won the Novice Handicap from Royal Show and Indian Sun. Lord Midas, Te Haka, King Gustavo and Lady Tinkle were well placed running on to the course proper, and in the run home Lady Tinkle held on just well enough to beat Royal Show and Indian Sun, with Laughing Song a good fourth. Lady Tinkle was at home in the going, but Royal Show went close to worrying her out of first place. Royal Show was at a long price for a place and would have paid a very big dividend had ho won. For a two-year-old Indian Sun ran a fiuo race. Te Haka went well for a while but tired. Slayer Stays Too Well Slayer stayed too well for the July Steeplechase field. All Irish and Gold Wren were the leaders from the outset, both jumping finely. All Irish was leading by several lengths from Gold Wren when he hit the board fenco and dislodged his rider. He had then covered about one round. Gold Wren, Lord Hereford and Manawatu were in line crossing the stand double with a round to go, but Slayer and Lactose were handy. Gold Wren was tiring five furlongs from home and Manawatu was in front with Slayer advancing. Slayer led across the top and into the straight from Manawatu, Lord Hereford and Lactose, and in the run home he was too solid, winning by two lengths from Manawatu, who was ridden out to beat Lactose. Gold Wren finished a poor fourth. Car Leaf baulked at the stand double early in the race and Lord He. eford fell at the last fence when very tired. Hunting Royal Again Revelling in the mud, Hunting Royal came with a later run in the Crofton Handicap and secured the decision just when Screen Star looked likely to win. Quilp began well, but Screen Star, Little Ruse, Windsor Chief and Rex Maitland were handy and were the leaders soon after moving on to the course proper. Windsor Chief and Screen Star were fighting out the finish and Screen Star had gained the upper hand when Hunting Royal swept up on tho outer and won well. Screen Star was three-quarters of a length away and beat Windsor Chief by a length. Blonde Princess ran a good race in fourth place and the rest were Mothcr-in-Law and Conversion. Favourite Falls King Rev was solidly backed to win tho Winter Hurdles, but he fell wdien leading a mile and a-quarter from home. Contract failed to go with the field and Curie and Disturbed lost ground at the start. King Key and Royal Dance took Up the running and with & round to go King Rey was in charge, going splen didly, but he measured the hurdle near the winning post very badly and fell. Royal Dance went on in the lead from Ellanui, with Erination handy, Curie moving up and Court Yard fairly well placed. Court Yard had had enough six furlongs from home and Erination and Curie were going wen. Curie took command soon after passing the five furlongs and from then on looked all over the winner. Disturbed made a good run from the back but eventually tired and Curie won by ten lengths from Ellanui, who beat Disturbed by four lengths. Erination was fourth, then Royal Dance, Innes Lad and Court Yard. Curie is another mudlark and made light of the going. King Key I must have been very hard to beat but J for his mistake. Erination ran a good I race and Disturbed did really well after I having lost so much ground.

Very Easy Victory Ned Cuttle was sent out favourite for the Winter Oats and he won in runaway style. Alma, Monipere and Sly Fox were not well away. Debham ran to the lead and others prominent were Rollicker, Skyrena and Yours Truly, while Old Surrey aoon ran into a good position. Araboa moved up on the outer, Jack Tar was moderately placed and Tidewaiter was fairly well back. Nearing the straight Skyrena had charge from Old Surrey, with Alma handy, Ned Cuttle going strongly, Lowenberg, Deficit and Araboa handy, Araboa tiring. In the last furlong Ned Cuttle drew right away and won by eight lengths from Lowenberg, who was three lengths clear of Old Surrey, with Monipere, Kena, Skyrena, Le Toquet and Mishna next. With the exception of the winner all the horses were extremely tired as they struggled past tha post. • Majority’s Sprint Majority registered a fine performance by winning the Onslow Handicap with 10.1 on his back. Sporting Gift, Fleet Street and Bachelor King were the leaders on to the course proper, with Majority and Prince Acre coming through. Majority ran on splendidly to beat Prince Acre by a couple of lengths. lioyal Bachelor was a fair third, Peacock fourth, Matoru fifth and Gay Seton sixth. With Ned Cuttle and Majority the New Plymouth trainer R. Johnson won both the day’s principal fiat races. Dead-heat for Finish The meeting ended wita a dead-heat between Centrepoise and Wagner in the Ivia Ora Handicap. Neptune, Laughing Song, Wagner and Centrepoise were tho leading division six furlongs from home, and coming to tae straight Laugning Song was clear of Peach King, with Centrepoise alongside. At the raise rail Wagner shot through and he and Centrepoise fought out a great battle to the post, the judge dead-heat-ing them. Laughing Song was a poor third and Viracious was fourth, ahead of Peach King, Auto Sweep and Etzel.
