RANGITIKEI BEATS OROUA 1 The annunal Rugby fixture botween Rangitikei and Oroua Unions was played at Bulls on Saturday on the Domain grounds before a good attendance. The grounds were in good order for Rugby despite the recent heavy rain, but the game was not up to representative football standards, being at times ragged, with far too many infringements holding up play. The scores were most made up from penalty kicks. Rangitikei’s scores came from a field goal, three penalty goals and two tries (one converted). Oroua failed to cross Rangitikei ’s line, their nine points being from penalty goals. The teams were:— Oroua: Lawrence, Thevenard, Amadio (captain), Thompson, Shannon, Thompson, Coley, Revell, Lewis, Gibbs, McKenzie. Glassford, Elliot, Bielski, Femberton. Rangitikei: J. Illston, K. Coles, A. Busli, C. Culpan, P. Williams, A. B. Marshall, D. McLennan, L. Rowe, B. Te Hiwi, G. Glasgow, S. Ireland, Batten, L. Gray, L. Lynn, L. Pye. The Play Shortly after the kick-off Rangitikei (green) took play to Oroua’s (blue) twenty-five line and G. Marshall opened the score with a field goal for Rangitikei, 4—o. Play resumed and Oroua were penalised and Marshall added another three points to Rangitikei’s score, 7 —o. A free kick given against Rangij tikei saw Amadio place a nice goal for ! Oroua, 7 —3, after about ten minutes of ) play. Thompson put in a run for blue and play was in Rangitikei’s twentyfive, where the defenders were penalised and Amadio goaled again for his side, bringing tho score to 7—6. Williams secured the ball and ran to blue’s line. Here again the blues were penalised and Marshall placed another goal for his side, making tho score 10 —G in Rangitikei’s favour. McLennan, the green half-back, got his backs away, but faulty passing on the outside spoilt the move. Williams picked up and sent tho ball to Culpan and back again it went to Williams, who was well passed inside blue’s twentyfive. The Rangitikei forwards pressed hard but tho blue defence held and a free kick relieved play. The blue forwards took play to green’s line and a free kick was given them in an easy position from which Amadio goaled, making the score 10—9. McKenzie for blues looked dangerous, but was held up and play was centred for some time. Another free kick went to Rangitikei, but Marshall missed and Amadio returned tho kick into midfield. Oroua carried play into Rangitikei line and Glassford was nearly over, being pushed back. A scrum near the corner gave Rangitikei the advantage and relieved the situation. After an interchange of kicks, McLennan secured and cut through, feeding his backs well to invade Oroua’s line when half-time sounded with the score 10—9 in Rangitikei’s favour. After the spell, Rangitikei forwards invaded again. Infringements were frequent and Rangitikei had an easy chance given them for Marshall to place a goal, making the score 13 —9. Illston was called upon to defend an Oroua charge, missing a bouncing ball. He was lucky in clearing and transferred play to half way. Blue’s again goT going, and Amadio was grassed on the Rangitikei line, where a scramble for possession took place, Rangitikei winning possession, and clearing in time. McLennan fed Williams, but the blues took charge. S. Thompson kicked too hard and Illston forced. Marshall went through the blue pack and sent the ball out to Williams to Coles, who went for the blue line, being held up when only a foot from scoring at the corner. L. Thompson (Oroua) retired and height came on. Greens attacked and were pressing hard. Pye, who was playing a good game for Rangitikei, snapped up the leather and went over for tho first try. Marshall’s kick went wide. 16 —9. Ireland and Pye headed a forward rush, compelling Thevenard to force down for Oroua. Blues carried the play to greens’ twenty-five for a scrum, McLennan relieving with a long kick, Pye again being conspicuous. Marshall crosskicked to Thompson, who gathered In nicely. Ho looked dangerous for a while 'but was eventually laid low. At this stage Culpan retired, Tait taking his place. Amadio vainly tried to pot from a long distance, then Busli missed a nice pass from Marshall. Coley and Right carried play back for Oroua, but the Rangitikei forwards again returned play. Marshall had a chance to pot but missed, and Bush with fast following up beat liis man for the ball and scored. Pye goaled, making the score 21—9.
