BRITISH TEAM’S VISIT TO S. AFRICA BIGGEST GATE AT CAPETOWN Gross profits of £l6B Ss 2d and £235 15s 6d on the British tennis team’s tour of South Africa and on the recent South African national championships at Ellis Park respectively are revealed in the accounts which were passed at a meeting of the Council of the South African Lawn Tennis Union. With regard to the British tennis team’s visit, some interesting figures were revealed in regard to the takings at the various Test matches. The Durban Test yielded a gate of £499 3s, but there was a loss on this match of £2 14s sd. The Johannesburg Test realised a gate of £657 13s lOd and with it a profit of £49 16s 2d. It was left to the final Test at Capetown to provide the best gate figures of the tour. Takings for this match amounted to £797 18s 6d. and the profit £127 19s Id. Three of the provincial fixtures were run at a loss to the associations concerned —Border, Griqualand West and the Free State. A net profit of £ll3 7s Id on provincial matches and £44 8s 9d on the Test matches has accrued to the National Union from the tour. S.A. Championships. Gate takings and entry fees in the national championships at Ellis Park this year amounted to £603 15s, and a credit balance of £235 15s 6d. resulted. Ten per cent, of gross takings to which the S.A. Lawn Tennis Union is entitled amounted to £6O 7s 6d and sixty per cent, of the profits for other centres amounted to £l4l 9s 9d. Claims of the various centres against this, however, totalled £2Ol 17s 3d., and it was decided at the meeting after some discussion that these claims be met.
