Racing at Dannevirke To-day

Dannevirke Hunt Meeting Has Drawn Great Fields

PROSPECTS FOR TO-DAY The going should be good at Dannevirke to-day, and horses which might command respect in their engagements are as under:— Oringi Hack Hurdles: Master Hector, Harbour Bar, Te Morehu. Takapau Novice Stakes: Kaiwaka, Eola, Cherry Picker. Hunt Cup Steeples: Harbour Bar, Given, Blue Tiger. Rakaiatai Hack: Haile Selassie, Miss Waitarere, Quilp. Kaitoke Handicap: Granvale, Mataroa, Soho. Akitio Ladies’ Bracelet: Inheritance, Royal Toast, Full o’ Spirit. Greenhills Hack Cup: The RingInheritance bracket, Seyfried, Morning Flight.

SINGLE POOL BETTING The Dannevirke Hunt Club’s popular annual meeting will be held on the Dannevirke racecourse today and in view of the fact that the acceptances are particularly good, it should be one of the most successful fixtures in the history of the club. The first race is timed to start at noon and the going should be good. Tho first event is the Oringi Hack Hurdles, the topweight being Master Hector with 9.13. He has been in the money in his last three starts and, on his home course, he is likely to be favourite. The strongest opposition is likely to be provided by Umpire, Sir Nigel, Te Morehu, Gascon and Harbour Bar, but there is not much form to serve as a guide. Tigreterre, Liberal Star and Harbour Bar are also accepted for the Hunt Cup Steeples. The favourites may be Master Hector, Harbour Bar and Te Morehu. Thero aro no less than IS acceptors for the Takapau Novice Stakes and among those that have shown some form aro Defray, Cherry Picker, Manteau, Eola and Kaiwaka. There is every chance of a surprise, but with good barrier jiositions the best-fancied aro likely to be Kaiwaka, Eola, Cherry Picker. Tho Dannevirke Hunt Cup Steeplechase, timed to start at 1.20 p.m., will be decided over a course of about 21 miles. There are J 4 acceptors and although there may be some scratchings, a good field is sure to parade. The three at the head of the handicap are Prosy Boy, Blue. Tiger and the veteran ’chaser Given. They are bound to be respected. Further down are Harbour Bar and Bang Bang. If the sod wall is as big a trouble to-day as it proved last year and the year before, safe jumping will count for more than pace on the flat and three that are likely to appeal aro Harbour Bar (if reserved), Given and Blue Tiger. There are nine acceptors for the Rakaiatai Hack Handicap and Quilp, the topweight, ran a great race at Otaki last Saturday. So did Miss Waitarere, who was not away with the first of them but who improved steadily to finish behind tho placed horses. Royal Tinge has been off the scene for some time, but Screen Star, Lindrum and Haile Selassie should lack for nothing on the score of condition. The betting may point to Haile Selassie, Miss Waitarere and Quilp. The principal flat race of the day is the Kaitoko Handicap and Mataroa is topweight with 9.1. Mataroa won the big race at Otaki last Satlurday, carrying 7.13. Tho field is not as strong today and 9.1 should not stop him. Hunting Cat showed some pace in the amateur riders’ event at Hastings, and Soho, Repair, Granvale, Hunting Mint and Sir Nigel aro all reported to be well forward. Middle goes on to Trentham so that he should be near top form, and Diamond Cutter has bcon working well at Awapuni. Stella Lux should bo all tho better for the race she had at Otaki last Saturday. It is a great field and a splendid race should result. The favourites may be Granvale, Mataroa and Soho. There is another good field for tho amateur riders’ event, the Akitio Ladies’ Bracelet for which most support is likely to be accorded Inheritance, Royal Toast and Full o’ Spirit. The day will conclude with the Greenhills Hack Cup over nine furlongs. There aro twelve acceptors, including Screen Star, Inheritance, which will be bracketed with The Ring, Marsyas, Colin, Gascon and Master Hector, which have been paid up for in earlier events. The favourites may be The Ring-Inheritance bracket, Seyfried and Morning Flight. H.B. HUNT CLUB NOMINATIONS FOR ANNUAL MEETING DUE MONDAY The Hawke’s Bay Hunt Club’s popular annual meeting will be held at Hastings on Saturday, July 15. There are seven races on the programme including one for amateur riders. The principal event is the Harold Russell Memorial Challenge Cup Steeplechase, and the stake for which is £l3O with a five-guinea miniature cup and a £75 challenge cup. It is for qualified hunters and it will bo decided over a course of about 21 miles. There are five flat races, including the Riverslea Hack Handicap over a mile and aquarter, and the Tikokino Handicap (open) over, six and a-half furlongs. DEATH IN MELBOURNE Norman Godby, aged 51, formerly one of tho best jockeys in Australia, died on Juno 19 in a private hospital in East Melbourne. He was a brother of the Caulfield trainers, Cecil'and Frank Godby. His best win as a jockey was when he beat Wakeful on Lord Cardigan in the 1903 Melbourne Cup. Ho also won a Futurity Stakes on Gladsome, and many weight-for-age events.
