Wanganui Education Board

SCHOOL REQUESTS BEFORE YESTERDAY’S MEETING Present at yesterday ’s meeting of the Wanganui Education Board were Messrs. E. F. Hemingway (chairman), W. H. Brown, I. W. Mudford, A. S. Coleman, W. T. Benefield, N. Annabell, L. A. Bailey, P. Munro, W. J. Batchelar and Colonel J. H. Whyte. Fitzherbert East. —The architect reported an excellent site for a teacher’s residence and it was decided to adopt the recommendation. Manchester Street. —The department notified a grant for the erection of separate open-air classrooms for levelling of stepped floors, and two-thirds of the cost of installing a heating system. Land for State Houses.—The department asked if the board had any objection to handing over to the Housing Department of six lots at the corner of Fitzherbert Avenue and Te Awe Awe Street, Palmerston North. Colonel Whyte spoke against the proposal, as there was a possibility of the land being required for extension of the Girls’ High School area.

Mr. Brown thought that the old College Street School site would be an excellent one for State houses. An area adjacent to the new school would be more appreciated for school purposes and perhaps an arrangement could be come to with the State Housing Department whereby they took the old College Street School site in exchango for an area adjoining the new school. The board decided to prospect the position. Whakarongo.—The architect recommended a post-hole bore system of sanitation instead of a septic tank. The Whakarongo committee submitted a rough sketch of proposed baths and asked the board’s assistance in obtaining a subsidy on the cost of sinking a well so that further work could be carried out.

The architect reported that the bath would probably cost £6OO and the water scheme £l79—total £779. Of that amount the school committee had raised £l4O, and while the Government subsidy of £2OO would relieve the position the committee would still have to raise £439 by local effort. He would like to see the committee give proof of its financial ability to proceed before he proceeded with plans .

The board decided to ask Whakarongo to consider a smaller bath, the architect to supply figures of cost at the next meeting.

The architect reported that he proposed arranging shortly for the remodelling of the Whakarongo school building. Longburn. An application from, the Longburn Committee for a supply of curtains to darken a room for the use of a film projector was approved.

Milsou.—The committee asked for a grant of £l7 9s 6d for concreting wofk or alternatively £ls 15s for proposed top-dressing of ashphalt.—A grant of £lO 10s was approved, but it is to be pointed out to the committee that the concrete work has been carried out over the septic tank and should be removed. In this connection the architect pointed to the necessity of committees submitting to the board beforehand proposals of such a nature in order to avoid such things happening. Ohakea. —An application for a drill and basketball area in the list of ground improvements was held in abeyance, the architect drawing attention to the possibility of the influx of employees to the aerodrome at Ohakea, and, in such a case, the need for a review of the school accommodation. He urged the board to investigate the position and the suggestion was adopted.

An application to connect up the teacher’s residence with the school septic tank is to be reported on by the architect.

Hokowhitu.—The committee asked for the completion of repairs to drain, concrete and gate. The architect reported that he had carried out the more urgent works at Hokowhitu and what had been left would have to wait till other more urgent work in the board’s area was attended to. The board agreed with the architect.

An application for a refund of the cost of replacing trees destroyed by fire caused by a faulty incinerator was received, the board deciding to make a grant of 15s for a new chimney pot, but thought the committee could bear the tree-planting costs itself. Central.—The architect was given authority to expend £2l additional to £250 already authorised for replacing a boiler. The W.E.A. was granted permission to distribute copies of a booklet through Palmerston North school children and to address senior children at the end of the year on the importance of adult education. Lytton Street. —The secretary presented a lengthy report on a meeting held with Awahuri parents regarding the school bus service and the board expressed pleasure at the satisfactory outcome.
