Steps taken by the board to care for mentally defective children are outlined in tjio annual report of the Otago Education Board. An occupa* tion centre, as it is termed, has been established for those children who are below the sub-normal standard of the special class, and is in charge of an exchange teacher who holds high qualifications in this type of work and who has arranged to carry On for another year. The main purpose of the centre, the report states, is to develop the children to a point at which they may occupy their own time usefully, if possible, but, if not, at least in a way that will relieve their parents of worry and constant care.
