Small Revenue But Bright Prospects
FOXTON HARBOUR BOARD The financial position of the Foxton Harbour Board came in for some comment from members at its meeting yesterday, when it was stated that, although the revenue was small, the prospects for the future were bright. “Wo took only £39 for the month and that is not enough to pay expenses,” said Mr P. W. Goldsmith, of Levin. The secretary: It’s not enough to pay the instalments. Mr H. Osborne, of Foxton: The secretary rang me the other day to say that a Feilding firm had applied to ship cattle through Foxton. I have written down to the Canterbury Shipping Company and they say they can give us a full load of cattle some time in July and approximately 300 would come through tho port in the season. Even if they had only half a load they would get a full one back. The firm has commended the board on its facilities for handling cattle, which are the best on the coast. This is outward cargo which should be profitable to the board.
Mr Linklater (chairman): Although the present indications are not very good, the prospects are bright and we live in hope. Mr Osborne added that tho Huanui was due to-day and tho Hokitika would shortly arrive with a load of timber. Later Mr Osborne asked what revenue the board had received from the camping site fees, but it was pointed out that the balance-sheet for last year was not yet completed. The financial statement showed a debit balance of £6O 6s 5d for May as against a debit of £54 9s 6d at tho same month last year. The expenditure for the month amounted to £99 6s 13 d.
