From Our Own Correspondent. Labour Party Euchre Thero wus a grood attendance at the Labour Party euchre on Monday evening. The prize-winenrs were Mrs. M. Jacobs and Mr. J. Malone, who won in the playoff from Mr. R. Malone. Mesdames D. McNieoi, D. Malone and Miss S. Prujean tied for the consolation prize, which Was won by Mrs. Malone. Mr. J. O’Hagan won the men’s consolation. Committee members served supper, and it was de cided to return to the original admission charges and to present first and second prizes in future. Country Cribbage The Kiwitea cribbage team visited Apiti on Monday evening and afTer many closely contested games proved the winners of the match by 26 games to 24. Kiwitea team: Messrs. W. Clapham (captain), S. Lodge, A. Barrow, L. and J "'ranston, P. Bismarck, T. Still, F. Paris, F. Garnett and C. Weir. Apiti team: Messrs Prujean (captain), T. K. McLean, W. and A. R. McKenzie, Ern and Eric Schmidt, L. Guy, W. McKay, F. Camp-bell and S. Le Quesne. At the conclusion of play supper was enjoyed. Personal Mr. and Mrs. Cyril Dee, of Stoke, Nelson, and Mr. R. Thompson, of Wellington, have oeen the guests of Mrs. S. F. Morris at the schoolhouse. Miss L. Stanley, who is holidaying at Pelorus Sound, Joined a fishing party and caught some fine blue cod and assisted her cousin, Mrs. R. Osborne, to bring in a ten-foot shark which was a most unexpected catch. Mr. J. McKay, of Taumarunui. has been staying with his sister, Mrs. H. C. McIntyre. Mias M. Mawhinney spent the holiday week-end at Patea. Mrs. Eric Schmidt is holidaying in Hamilton, whte Mr. E. Schmidt and Mr. E Beckman are visiting Auckland. Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Watkins, of Auckland, accompanied by Mrs. R. N. Spiers and her two small sons, of Foxton, have been the guests of Mrs. G. Watkins. Mr. and Mrs. A. E. Prujean have been visiting Napier. At last week’s meeting of the Christian Fellowship Study Group opportunity was taken to farewell Mbs. W. C. McMillan, one of the group’s most faithful members, who is shortly leaving Apiti to make her home in Linton. Mrs. McMillan was the recipient of a dainty floral posy and a framed text with the best wishes of her friends. Mr. David Cowan has returned to Pongaroa after visting his parents. Mr. and Mrs. G. Cowan. There are many residents of the district who will regret to hear of the death of Mrs. Mary Blair Kearney, which oc curred in Gisborne last week. The late Mrs. Kearney lived in Apiti from 191 S until 1921, when her husband, the Rev. W. K. Kearney, was In charge of the Presbyterian Home Mission District, tfTld during her residence at the Manse made many friends who will regret the passing of such a kindly Christian lady. Sympathy will be extended to Rev. Kearney and his family in their bereavement. Mrs. D. Swift and Miss Peggy Swift left Apiti on Tuesday to spend a long holiday in Napier. Mr. and Mrs. Smith, of Weetshore. Napier, have arrived here and taken over the Apiti Hotel. Mr. and Mr*. H. L. Osborne, of Norsewood Road, have gone on a holiday visit to Auckland. Mrs. M. A. Harland and Stella have returned from a holiday in the South Island. Mr. and Mrs. A. Budd, of Palmerston North, are the guests of Mrs. J. R. Osborne. Miss S t rail a n has returned home after •pending a fortnight at Tiritea Valley. Methodist Guild The Methodist Guild met at the home of Mrs. Dlgby on Tuesday afternoon. Also present were Mesdames Ashworth (presi dent), T. H. Purnell. W. R. Pratt. L Gould, L. Guy, L. Martin, E. Clifton. C. McKay, Misses B. Churcher, Gwen Digby,

Coral Digby, and two Visitors, Miss Jones (Te Arakura) and Miss A. Kreger (Palmerston North). The president Jed the devotions and read an excerpt from a mission book. Further arrangements were made for the 45th aniversary of tho Apiti Methodist Church, which is to be celebrated early in July. Miss G. Digrl< is to make the anniversary (Take. Good sales at the quarterly bring and buy table augmented funds. A social competition was won by Mrs. Ashworth. Mrs. Digby and her daughters served afternoon tea and were thanked for their hospitality. Women’s Institute Committee The committee of the Apiti Women's Institute met on Wednesday afternoon. Mrs. C. M. Stanley presided and there were present: Msdames G. Watkins, J. R. Osborne, W. M. Duncan, L. Gould, J. Malone, D. McNieoi, A. W. Benseman (secretary), Misses Strahan and B. Churcher. Mrs. L. Gould consented to take over the treasurer's duties for the remainder of the W.I. year. Arrangements were made for programmes until October. The July meeting will be at the Community Centre, Feilding. Mrs. Duncan, snr., has promised a prize for a darning competition for high school girls. Mrs. Proctor, of Umutoi, will be the speaker for the June meeting and the hostesses are Mesdames Munro, L. Guy and Duncan. Competitions: Pikelets, vase of berries and foliage, and best bloom. An interesting letter was read from the secretary of Send W.I. in Surrey. Mrs. Benseman then entertained the committee at afternoon tea, and Mrs. Stanley moved the vote of thanks to the hostess. TUnnis Dance The Apiti Tennis Club’s end of season dance was held on Friday evening and the stage of the hall was attractively decorated with chrysanthemums, bright berries and foliage. Owing to counter attractions the attendance was not as large as anticipated but nevertheless the function was enjoyed by the dancers present, and its success was due to the energetic committee members, Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Osborne, Misses M. Osborne and M. Mawhinney. Dance music was supplied by Messrs. Jack Hansen and R. Prince, with extras by Messrs. Frank Churcher and Moess (Rangiwahia). The prize-winners for the lucky dances were: Monte Carlo, Miss Waterson (Linton) and Mr. W. Wildbore; Gay Gordons, Miss Noelline Churcher and a visitor; spot waltz, Mrs. A. H. McNae and partner. Mrs. J. Osborne and Misses Osborne and Mawhinney served supper. Mr. J. Han-' sen, a member of the Haythorne Cup Committee, congratulated the Apiti Club on winning the cup and presented it to Mr. Cyril Osborne, president of Apiti Club, who thanked Mr. Hansen for his remarks. The miniature cups for the Apiti Club championships were then presented to Mrs. A. H. McNae and Mr. Don Stewart, the recipients receiving the congratulations of all present. The lucky box of chocolates was won by Mrs. Colin McKay. R.S.A. Reunion Some 80 returned soldiers and veterans gathered on Friday evening for the Apiti R.S.A. annual reunion. The president, Mr. W. J. Osborne, accorded the visitors a warm welcome and after proposing the toast to “The King” invited Mr. B. J. Jacobs, of Palmerston North, vicepresident of the N.Z.R.S.A., to take the chair. The toast list was interspersed with songs by Messrs. C. M. Stanley, S. F. Morris, W. A. Churcher (Rongotea), H. G. Mapson and others, and bagpipe selections by Mr. Nicholson (Palmerston North) and Mr. McKenzie (Feilding), and xylophone solos by Mr. C. Bell, of Palmerston North, who, with Mr. Moess, of Rangiwahia, played the accompaniments. "Absent Comrades’’ was proposed by Mr. S. M. Stanley, who sang “Requiem,” after which Mr. Tom Osborne sounded “Past Post” and “Reveille.” “N.Z.R.S.A.” was proposed by Mr. W. J. Osborne and Mr. B. J Jacobs responded “Visitors” was proposed by Mr. R. A. Cheyne and replies were made by Messrs. W. A. Churchill (president of Rongotea R.S.A.), DurfStall (president of Ashhurst R.S.A.), Nicholson (Palmerston North), Salt (Mangaweka). “Kindred Associations” were toasted by Mr. B. J. Jacobs and Mr. Lankshear, president of

the Palmerston North South Afrioan War Veterans’ Association, replied. Mr. A. E. Prujean proposed “The Entertainers” and Mr. T. Osborne replied. The committee were the “mess orderlies” responsible for the cooking and serving of a hot supper. The evening concluded with a community sing of war-time favourites. Golf j The Apiti ladies played an eclectic competition on Saturday and the best card was handed in by Mrs. It. Hooper. ! The men’s team visited Kimbolton at the week-end for a challenge match for the, Mcßetli Cup. Games were keenly con- i tested but the Kimbolton Club had a decided win and retained the trophy. Football The senior football match between ! Apiti and Rangiwahia was a fairly evenly ; played game which interested a good at- ; tendance of football supporters at the ■ Apiti Domain on Saturday. Apiti took the field with only 13 players. However, a full team was playing about a quarter ‘ of an hour after play commenced. Amadio converted and at halftime the visitors led B—3. In the second spell there were no idle moments, both teams playing a willing but friendly game. From loose play Ted Bielski got the ball and scored, Amadio adding the extra points. Apiti was making determined attempts to score, but the visitors repelled all attacks. Les. Thompson collected the ball, ran down the line, dodging his opponents and scored, bringing the Rangiwahia total to 16, and the game finished 16—3 in their favour. Mr. Cyril Osborne was the referee.
