Gallops At Awapuni

BRAZIL, CUISINIER AND WILDFLOWER €0 FAST

Power Chief Jumped Well Over the Country

With the Manawatu meeting only three days away there were some interesting gallops at Awapuni yesterday morning, and the conditions were ideal. The flags were about 25 feet out and the going was firm without bing hard. There was a heavy shower later in the morning and the course should be in perfect order for Friday. A number oi : horses raced at Otaki on Saturday and they were let off with light tasks, and the feature gallops were those of Brazil and Cuisinier, over a mile, Ken a and Paxena, over live, Wildflower and Corroboree, over a mile, and Old Surrey and Thrasos over seven. Power Chief jumped the country, improving as he warmed up, and Redolent, who suffered no ill-effects as a result of his fall at Otaki, galloped a line mile with a light boy up. Catalogue galloped a mile on his own and he went well enough to suggest he could have improved upon his time. The Crooner was let off with pace work, but he looks well and it is understood he will race in the open seven on Saturday. Tom Tom and Guiding Light were given useful pace work, and Stargono (K. Kanake) slipped over five in 1.9. Hanover, looking a picture, was given pace work on the plough, and then the galloping was commenced on the course proper. Colonel Bogey (V. Dye) sprinted five in 1.6, the last three in 39 4-5, and Girl Pat (S. Waddell) was a couple of lengths away from Verey Lights (H. Stewart) at the end of five in 1.5, the last threo in 39. Erebus (Tricklebank) and Royal Choice (P. Jarvis) wore companions over a mile, which they cut out in 1.53, the last three in 40 4-5. Both are in good order for Friday. Colibri (J. Chaplin) was timed to run the last three of four in 39, and Bridegroom (Williamson) and Kahui (G. R. Tattersall) broke 1.10 for five, Kahui finishing in front. Quadroon (M. Bowden) sprinted five on the plough, being timed to run the last four in 53 4-5. He finished very strongly and he pulled up well. He is due to start in the Rongotea Handicap on Friday and a softer track will give him a better chanco of seeing it out. Taumau (R. Ireland) and All Blood (Stewart) galloped a mile in 1.50 and they went well throughout. It was an attractive effort for hurdle horses. Diamond Cutter (S. Waddell) recorded a smart five in 1.4, breaking 39 for the last three. Snigger (Jarvis) and Malik Kafur (Tattersall) sprinted four in 55, and Manteau (Tattersall) and Rollaway (Williamson) were a fraction faster over the same distance. Wildflower (Willamson) had a pull in the weights over Corroboree (E. Stewart) and after the latter had led to the three Wildflower drew level and finished a couple of lengths to the good. Corroboree, however, finished on and ho worked very well. The time for the full distance was 1.47 3-5, the last throe in 41 2-5. Redolent (Dye) hit out very boldly over a mile and finished well to record 1.51, the last three in 41 4-5. Redolent jumped brilliantly at Otaki until he came to grief. Brazil (Ireland) and Cuisinier (Chaplin) did not take long to find their feet and the pace was on from the start. They were together all the way and Brazil kept his head in front in a solid finish. The time for the full distance, the best of the morning, was 1.46 3-5. Catalogue, with Alan McDonald up, covered the last three of a mile in 40 to record 1.50, and he went well. Though he might need the race ho should give a good account of himself on Friday. Golden Ridge (W. Jenkins) and Seyfried (Dye) were just in front of Wananga (K. Kanake) at the end of a smart five in 1.5. Old Surrey (Chaplin) was not out after time in his gallop with Thrasos (Ireland), but he could not have gone much better in cutting out the distance in 1.35. He finished a couple of rounds in 1.35. Ho finished a couple of lengths race at Otaki.

Kena (H. Stewart) galloped six, being picked up by Paxena (S. Waddell) at the five, and they came homo very fast to cover the distance in 1.4.

Cuddler, who looks well, galloped six on the plough, the last three taking 40. Sunbeam (W. E. Pine) was schooled and he hit the third hurdle hard. Pine took him back and gavo him another chance at it, but he again hit it. Power Chief (A. McDonald), looking better than he did before Otaki, jumped the country and the further he went the better he liked it. Ho jumped four brush fences and threo post and rails and his display over the brushes was faultless. The hard ones, however, he treated with the greatest respect, TROTTING FIXTURES May 27—Canterbury Park T.C. May 27, 31—Auckland T.C. June s—Ashburton T.C.
