Amazing Masquerade
WOMAN WHO LIVED AS MAN FOR 51 YEARS Received Sunday, 7.0 p.m. SYDNEY, May 14. A remarkable case of a woman who masqueraded as a man for 61 years and had two wives was revealed when Annie Payne, aged 04, became an inmate of the old men’s home at Lidcombe suburb last week. Her sex was discovered when she was taken to the bath. The woman lived under the name of Harcourt Payne. She came to Australia from Derbyshire when she was 13. She immediately donned boy’s clothes and ever since has led the life of a man. She followed the occupations of labourer, traveller, tram conductor, rate collector and assistant town clerk. Both her marriages are said to have been happy. Her last wife died a few weeks ago.
