Women’s Institutes

POHANGINA The May meeting was held in the public hall, Mrs. J. Moar presiding over a fair attendance. Apologies were received from Mesdames Galvin, Wagstaff and R. Culling. The thought for the month was: “We can only have the highest happiness by having wide thoughts.” It was decided to have if possible the October meeting at the Community Centre in Feilding. It was also decided to enter for the street of shop windows competition at the forthcoming Winter Show to be held in Palmerston North. The report on the annual council meeting was presented by Mrs. Orgias. Mrs. Sporle gave an excellent demonstration on papier mache, Italian quilting and several novelties. She was warmly applauded by all present. The competitions were judged by Mesdames Sporle and Pack, and resulted: Plate of ginger nuts (special prize given by Mrs. Rowbotham), Mrs. A. J Shadbolt 1, Mrs. Drummond 2 and 3;| plain toffee, Mrs. J. .Stuart 1, Mrs. Drummond 2, Miss Sinclair 3. Afternoon tea was served, after which the National Anthem was sung, bringing an interesting afternoon to a close. GLEN OROUA At the May meeting Mrs. Wheeler presided over a good attendance of members, one new member, Mrs. Evans, being enrolled. Apologies for absence were received for Mrs. Milne and Mrs. Davey. An invitation to attend the Rongotea birthday was received. During the afternoon Mrs. Wheeler called upon Mrs. Yallender and made her a presentation on behalf of the members of the brass work circle and institute members. It was arranged that the Juno meeting would take place on the Friday before the usual day owing to the Palmerston North Show falling on the usual day, but since it has had to be altered again to a week earlier, the first Friday of June, arrangements for the Show can be settled. Final arrangements were also made for the euchre and dance which, is to take place next week; particulars will be advertised in the papers ou Saturday. After the business was finished, the afternoon was opened to celebrate the sixth birthday of the institute, and all members and visitors were given a hearty welcome and it was very pi ingsao and it was pleasing to see such a good attendance. Items were rendered by Miss M. Pearson; Miss N. Bailey, pianoforte solos; Mrs. Churchill, a musical monologue and recitation, which caused much laughter. Competitions during the afternoon were won by Mrs. Thompson and Mrs. Schaw, with Mrs. W. Boswell winning the nail-driving. At afternoon tea the oldest member, Mrs. Boswell, snr., was called upon to light the candles upon the birthday cake, and the youngest members, Miss M. Vallender, to blow them out, Mrs. Saunders being asked to cut the cake and all present were handed a piece. Mrs. Caverhill and Mrs. McKay judged the competitions, which, resulted as follow's: Dundee cake, Mrs. Saunders l, Mrs. W. Boswell 2, Mrs. Vallender 3; satin cushion, Mrs. Saunders 1, Mrs. Carter 2, Mrs. O’Connor 3; best bloom, Miss M. Vallender 1, Mrs. Saunders 2, Mrs. Vallender 3. The trading stall was well patronised, the takings being 10s 4d. Competitions for the June meeting are: Sausage rolls, household apron (cotton material, no fancy work); demonstration by Miss Hobbs on basket work; hostesses, Mesdames Boyce, Boswell, Davey and Miss Farmer. KAIRANGA Unfavourable weather and the prevalence of influenza were partly responsible for a rather smaller attendance than usual at the May meeting, over which. Mrs McClelland presided. Visitors were welcomed and the president expressed pleasure that a former member, Mrs Crosbie, was again present. Apologies for absence were received from Mesdames Davey, L. Clark, J. Burmiester, J. Clark, Mallett and C. Bee. The motto for this month was “A cheery smile and a how do you do, may change the sky from grey to blue.” Correspondence relating to entries for the A. and P. show classes for institutes wras discussed; it being decided that as several individual members would be competing in open classes, and the work entailed in the preparation of a window, would perhaps inconvenience them, tho Institute would not compete. A letter was received from Mrs Pedersen thanking members for their good wishes sent to her while in hospital. Trophies which were not presented last month owing to the absence of the recipients were awarded at this month’s meeting to Mrs McClelland and Miss I. Meager. Mesdames O. Collis and McClelland were the delegates to the half yearly council meeting and the report read by Mrs McClelland was followed with interest. The roll-call, “My Most Awkward Moment” provided an amusing interlude. The debate “Town and Country” will be held at the June meeting. The competitions will be, seniors and juniors, best knitted article and best bloom. The roll-call, “My Favourite Three-eours6 Dinner.” Hostesses, Mesdames Mallett, Leamy and Miss I. Meager. This month’s demonstration was given by Mrs Brookfield, who has so long been a successful exhibiter of decorative floral work. Using the many autumn tinted flowers now available Mrs Brookfield showed members the-construction of a presentation box, posies and other decorative work also answering many questions put by members, she was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. It is hoped that next month Miss Grant will be present to give an address on W.I. affairs. Hostesses were Mesdames Green, Jensen and Miss 11. Hall.
