Feilding S.P.C.A. Activities
MONTHLY MEETING HELD The Feilding branch of the Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals held its monthly meeting in the community centre last week. Those present were: Mrs. Morphy (in the chair), Mrs. Brandt, Miss Wright (hon. secretary), Mr. Coleman, Mr. W. C. Lee (inspector). Mr. G. Coleman, who acted as delegate to the conference of the federation held in Wellington last month, gave his report. Humane slaughtering of animals in the Dominion is considered behind that in other countries, and there is a desire to have standard methods throughout New Zealand. The Slaughtj ering of Stock and Inspection Amendment Bill of 72 clauses was discussed lat length. General improvement in handling bobby calves throughout the country was noted. Only 51 per cent, of the Dominion works aro under the Dairy Board’s pooling system. They have 58 pools and last season dealt with 400,000 calves. Of these only 1.98 per ceftt. needed to be destroyed. The average price given was 7s 2d. The method of destroying rabbits by poison was deprecated as cruel, but no other way of eradicating them in the rugged country in New Zealand has been devised. In Australia better methods arc employed wlicli are successful in flat country. Women lecturers in Christchurch are operating among school children to good effect. It is felt that S.P.C.A. inspectors should co-oper-ate unofficially with traffic inspectors and A.A. officials. Destruction of bird life in New Zealand is deplored. Thousand of pounds’ worth of damage is done by insects which could otherwise be kept down. The Borough Council will shift the trough from the Square to East Street ' where it will be of great benelit to travelling stock. The matter of leaving a ford at Kiwitca bridge will be considered. Mr. T. L. Seddon, the vice-president, sent £1 Is donation and was accorded thanks. The Manawatu County Council will consider the matter of putting a trough on the Sandon Road for the watering of stock. Mr. W. C. Lee reported a quiet period with the usual visits to the auction I mart, saleyards and holding paddocks, , The meat inspector had reported thal , killing at Feilding is well carried out.
